what are some good things to give up for lent?

1. Giving-up one thing, or several things, that we like, or enjoy doing, is a small, or even a big, suffering, and is called a penance.
2. A penance, no matter how big, will count for nothing, has no value, unless we join our suffering to Jesus Christ's suffering, and offer it to God the Father, to help others, such as, the poor souls in Purgatory, or the people we don't like, or the people we do like; or to help ourselves, which isn't selfish, because God wants us to ask him to help us, especially, to ask him to help us be with him forever in Heaven, when we die. Any penance, done the right way, automatically helps us get to Heaven.
3. Instead of giving-up something (a negative penance), we can add something to our lives we don't like doing (a positive penance).
4. I hope this helps to fully answer your question. More questions? Leave a comment.

A positive penance I like to practice is requiring myself to read the Bible & contemplative prayer each day.
Report as
Very well said Frank. Giving of ourselves out of love & always with our Lord guiding our way can never do harm. We become the receivers by using Gods grace to give or do for others. Positive Penance! I used to be like so many & just 'give up' a treat, then forget about it, the 1st time I had a craving, so I was always starting over. It was not really done out of love for anybody, but because of something I was supposed to do. It taught me Nothing! Now, I understand how important and rewarding self sacrifice is. I do something nice for another and it brings a smile to their face & guess what, to mine as well. A win, win gift. Visit a Veterans home, just to say Hi &Thank you. Watch their eyes show new life in what may have been a blank look. What a rewarding Penance, every time I do something like this. Just a thought.
Report as
Frank, that was a great answer, as you pointed out that pennance is not just about giving things up. This is the time of year that we look inward to take stock of where we need to change for the better. In that change we are drawn closer to the divine. The fact that Easter is during the year when there is a change in the season is not by accident. This is our time for renewal as well!
Report as
Nice job Frank! I think if we all did just one positive gesture during the lental season, our own little world will be better. Thanks for the insight.. You did your positive penance be responding....

Way to go frank!! My insight exactly !! Anything that can make us grow closer to God and love for one another.

I had a friend who loved apples and she gave that up. Be sure it's something you like and not something silly (for ex. giving up a food you hate).

The point of giving up things for lent is that its something that you want. The two things listed are what you should be giving up.

Our Priest had a good suggestion during the homily stating that anything that you think about a LOT and is constantly tugging at your mind to do it, eat it, etc. is something that you should consider worthy of giving up for lent. Otherwise, if you hate exercise, start trying to work out each day if it's okay with your physician. Hope that helped.

Good job Frank ! Well said. For Voxpop I suggest that you do anything that will improve your outlook on life (you know, positive vibes) . We are sorry that you do not appreciate what Religion can do for you.... perhaps in the future. Anyway, the idea of Lent IS getting you to Heaven. One way to do that is to put yourself last and others first. One word for that is "humility". Another is "empathy". Increasing these two attributes in your life is not just good for you, but our society in general. An OLD adage that is good is "Do unto others that you would want them do unto you". HOW about, try to "Pay it forward" once a week. No expectation of repayment, just help a fellow human ( a positive penance). "Self-sacrifice" is one way for you to stop thinking of just yourself and thinking about how you can get others to heaven also. Good luck and GOD Bless your endeavors.

The best thing to give up is to choose something that you find distracts you from doing the things you know you should be doing. It really doesn't matter what 'it' is...but it should be something that affects you personally.

This will sound nutty, but I've done this for three years. Times got a little rough for me, and I had to give up my cable connection back in 2011. I didn't want to see just local free television. I had distinct viewing tastes, so I just stopped turning the television on. I really had very few withdrawal symptoms. My daughter and I both would turn the television off or down because we are readers also.. The book that helped me over the hump was "Shantaram" 960+ pages, every word masterly crafted. When time came around, that I could re-install cable, I did not. .A seemingly necessary tool in today's society and a connection to the outside world, if sacrificed during the Lenten season, will strengthen you spiritually, as you read and write to a buddy, who might do this with you. You are encouraged to order your thoughts, meditate and pray. As we approach, I would like to wish you all peace, and contentment.

Oh my dear that is totally up to you. It is my understanding that that you give up something that means a great deal to. Something you might eat or do almost everyday. For instance sugar, cokes, cakes, tennis, horseback riding. Anything that would be difficult to give up. Remember. Jesus Christ gave up his sustenance , FOOD!

If doing with out ice cream and the phone will put you in a tail spin then that is just what you should give up. I mean if you enjoy walking on the sharp end of nails bare footed, then that is what you should give up. Giving up silly things like chocolate, ice cream, cakes or what ever will not mean much to Jesus. He gave up His life for you, not that glass of wine. He went with out nothing to eat for 40 days and 40 nights, and you want to give up a little dish of ice cream, let's get real about this. What you give up show's your devotion to God. If your devotion is a dish of ice cream, then I am so sorry. Except giving up your life for Him, can you match what he gave up for you. Try sleeping out side , with no blankets, just your coat, nothing to eat, by yourself for 40 days and nights. Perhaps you should think a little more on what to give up.

I believe the best thing to give up is the irrational belief in the existence of any supernatural being and rely entirely on your own common sense and education to guide yourself through the very difficult struggles and experiences of human life on this planet.

Grantl, I am so sorry you feel that way. This leads me to believe that perhaps you haven't had any miracles in your life. I have had many miracles, and supernatural things happen in my life, perhaps it is because I need more help then most people. My last miracle that I had was when I was so unhappy, and didn't know what to do, so I got down on my knees and prayed and cried. Then I stood up, started wiping away my tears, and through the kitchen window, came what looked like a small fluffy cloud. It came right to me, entered and surrounded me at the same time. I have never in my life felt so loved, understood, and filled with the knowledge that I was right where G-d wanted me. All the uncertainty, and worry dropped from my being. Even now, at times I can feel the cloud inside me, reassuring me, and guiding me. ... More then likely you will think I am crazy, and perhaps I am. But, I have a purpose to fill, I know there is more then can be dreamt of Horatio. Having said that, I have also seen a person that had seen the spirit of a friend that had passed over, deny what he had seen. I believe that a person who denies what he has seen, may be afraid of the consequences. After all, what does it say in the bible about turning your back on G-d?

I believe that "giving things up" for Lent is only a small part of the Lenten idea.Rather we should look for ways to be a better person by helping others in big or small ways.Help an elderly person take out their garbage, babysit for a harassed young mother, call your parents.....There are hundreds of ways to make Lent a positive experience

I am giving up smoking, in hopes that I will quit even after It's over.(40 days) What I really would love to give up for lent is breads and pastas. I know that I could not do it so I'm not even going to try. It is a promise and a sacrifice that you are making, in front of God....So it needs to be taken seriously. You don't want to fail, so choose wisely when deciding what you are willing to give up. Good luck and hopefully this will be a good experience for everybody.

It's not so much "things" to give up, it's more important to give inner things up. Like anger at people, bad feelings towards someone, holding in a grudge. Things that bring us down spiritually, and away from God.

I had a near death experience 15 years ago and was clinically dead for 9 1/2 minutes. During my "life review" I learned that what we do wrong is not nearly as important as the opportunities we missed to be kind and caring. My life has been so much richer simply by trying to apply this simple guideline every day.

ICE CREAM or PHONE!!! Lent is a period that Jesus went into the wilderness and avoided temptation. We observe as a period of purification which is why we often attempt to avoid our vices. Apparently the phone and ice cream are yours. If you are serious about participating in the season of lent... pick one!

I always try to make the penance something that is very tough to complete, but that I am able to do. A suggestion based on your 2 choices: if u eat ice cream every day, during Lent eat it once a week on a given day. With phone use, cut your time in half each day or keep phone off on given days.
With giving up something, I also do something I need to do, but don't, such as going to Mass each Sunday, volunteer during Lent, etc.
You can tailor make your Lent, dig deep and do what's probably good for you anyway.

To a bigger extent, many minds of people are always thinking about sex. please,to be more xtian this time, try abstaining during this lent period. Above all, lets read the bible/the word of God.

I always try to give up something that is unhealthy or bad for me. 2 years ago my Dad gave up Coke and he can't stand it now and is much healthier. Last year he gave up fried food and almost never eats anything fried anymore. I am giving up all soda for lent this year in hopes for better teeth and body health. Hope this helps!

Instead of "GIVING SOMETHING UP" why not consider doing something as your sacrifice to God? Most my life as a good Catholic I did what you are asking I gave up something that was my favorite, chocolate, movies, cursing, alcohol, you name it I gave it up. And then as a mother of five boys I decided NOW is the time to teach them by example. And the concept of giving and doing for others and the community became a much more effective learning tool for them. We cleaned the church one night as a family what fun we had..yes cleaning. They got to investigate the entire church behind the scenes, all that was a mystery to them as children. They gave back by scrubbing the pews and polishing everything on alter. And they still talk about it years later. They have volunteered at senior home for day to help moved or rearrange furniture or anything the elderly needed help with.
To answer your question directly how about "giving" as opposed to giving up, giving helps others, giving something up yourself, does nothing towards helping others. Just an idea and offered as my humble opinion.

Just give up something that you can live with out (ex. Not a car if you have a long commute to work) . Its a good idea to give up something that is the cause of an unhealthy habit, like sugary cereals for breakfast, or fast food for lunch. Good luck!

Don't set yourself up for failure ... Be specific . Don't generalize , for example ... Fast food . Be specific i.e.; burgers or pizza ... It should be something you really enjoy , but you know you can live without . You can also add something into your daily routine , like exercise , meditation or prayer , instead of eliminating a vice .

Giving up desserts, candies, gum, soft drinks, alcohol and "junk food" eaten between meals are forms of penance. Besides saving you monies, which you give to the poor, this type of fasting promotes personal discipline and self-control. So too other forms of contemporary Lenten practices, such as limiting TV viewing, texting, talking on your cell phone and playing video games.

I suggest giving up something that represents a sacrifice to you. Also, instead of giving up something, you can add something that is good for others, like visiting the sick, volunteering to teach people to read, grocery shopping for an elderly, and the such. This way you are sacrificing something very important---your time. And at the same time, you are helping others.
