raising taxes won't solve anything, they're just gonna waste the money and we'll be more in debt.
America should cut back spending.

Both. Just doing one or the other won't fix the debt.

You could always volunteer to give more of your own pay check to the government.

I'll consider that after I pay off my student loans, but there is a purpose to taxes. I think that's where the military gets their money to buy body armor and equipment and protect our interests like oil. I guess we don't really need a military which takes up most of the budget.

I think we should rebudget the money we have to be more useful, and find new ways of organizing our programs to be more financially efficient.

Cut back spending starting with Congress. Freeze on wages, pay into their health care like the rest of us and be given a generic set of furniture for their offices that they have to leave behind when end of term.

Spending moves our economy! If we don't spend we go under because it drives our economy! Raising taxes won't help the people who live here and cutting spending also won't help the people living here.

America just needs to spend correctly and invest in surer deals not the horrible loans and other bonds that led to our crash.

After all we can "outspend" our depression for a time; but you can't cut back just yet even if we wanted too because we are growing in debt not shedding it! Once we become more economically safe we should cut back though!

Are you talking about the government spending more or we the people because you do know the gov doesn't have any money of their own? It is taken out of the pockets of those who could spend it more wisely. Gov spending doesn't create wealth it steals wealth.
Report as
I'm talking about all of the above. And you do realize that while the government takes our money from taxes with all the tax breaks the government is bleeding red dollar signs. Soon our government will be bankrupt ><
Report as
Maybe if they stopped giving themselves pay raises when the rest of us are treading water or platinum card style health insurance when the rest of us are struggling.......wonder how much would be saved more than a few million I'd bet.

Go ahead. You can give the government more money if you think it would help.
Report as
Without cutting spending, more money isn't a solution. Spending cuts need to be made. Tax codes need to be rewritten or just tossed.

Cut back on spending. The government has already spent the "new revenue" from the new tax increases. We are only in February.

Cut spending! We spend more on defense then the next 9 top spending nations combined, are they in imminent danger of attack? No. We have bases worldwide and only 5 are critical to the war on terrorism. We have 11 Carrier task force groups active in the world, each cost billions of dollars to manufacture and hundreds of millions more each year to operate. We GIVE billions of dollars to foreign nations, and many of them hate us.
Since the next big war will be one of finance and cyber warfare we would be strengthening our defense by strengthening our economy. If we simply reduced defense spending by 20% we would balance our budget overnight, but of course we didn't heed Eisenhower's warning 50 years ago so I don't believe we will now. This means an increase in taxes, because cutting to deeply into domestic programs will have dire, long term effects on our economy.
We are kidding ourselves if we think having a large armed force is going to keep us safe from nations that can simply buy us too beat us.

I heard we spent more then the top 14 nations on military. I agree with much of what you said but not all. We must cut the waste in domestic spending. Just by cutting the fraud could make a huge difference.
Report as
You may be correct 14 wouldn't surprise me. Agreed the domestic spending can be trimmed and still not have a negative effect and of course the wasteful spending and fraud, but when we look at the percentage of GDP spent compared to the benefits gained, defense spending is the most glaring. PS~ I was a Captain in the US Army, so don't think I'm some kind of hippy.

You have to raise taxes to pay for everyone on welfare. If people just dont feel like working... we have to support them. To do that, we have to raise taxes to do it. ANYTHING that you get free from the government is not free. A taxpayer is paying for it.
I am not talking about everyone on welfare, wanting to be on it. I am talking about the very large majority that would just rather be on welfare then work like the rest of us.

Don't forget all the freebies illegal aliens get.
Report as
Wrong and wrong. Most people don't want to be on welfare, that's a myth perpetrated by the tea party. Most people would rather be productive, NOT live in crappy housing, NOT be sneered at, etc. even IF the majority of them were deadbeats, welfare is 12% of the budget...
Report as
Boo.... Dont know where YOU live... but where I am. People LOVE welfare. They say to hell with being productive... They want all the free they can get and LOVE getting it. If they are too productive... they cant smoke crack all day, They cant smoke pot all day. They live in what looks like crappy housing... but the insides are DECKED. Huge flat screens... berber carpet... Beautiful furniture... etc.
Oh.... the illegal aliens get freebies. Free medical, free dental... No social security to pay.... They got it made... why do you think they want to come here.

Count me in. I could use all that tax money for things like getting the salt and grime off my car (jobs for car washers) or get my dogs groomed (jobs for groomers) or better meals than hamburger (butchers, farmers etc). I could be helping to create/save jobs just by having lower taxes!
Report as
You're absolutely right!

We need to do both. Obviously we need to trim away all the waste we possibly can--and if the trimming isn't hurting a significant number of people, then we need to trim until it does. Now it may seem counter intuitive for the government to spend even more money during an economic downturn, but that is the one time when government spending actually makes sense. For one, more people are hurting, so more aid is necessary. Second, government works projects serve to help get money into the pockets of the population, which in turn produces more demand for consumer goods, which in turn causes companies to increase production and hire more workers, which in turn brings tax revenue back to the government to repay the initial investment.

(see campfire metaphor in comments...)

Consider a campfire. You have some tinder with some wood piled up. All you need is a spark. Government can act as the spark that ignites the kindling. Once the kindling ignites the smaller sticks which ignites the larger sticks, the fire can be tended by adding more wood now and then. What is important is that that initial spark produces enough heat to set the kindling on fire. That is why we must not try to get this country going again on the cheap or we will waste even more money. Do it right by making enough of an investment that the private sector can get going again in the shortest amount of time.

Super star!
Report as
You are saying its good to get money back in to the population by first taking it from the population? Yeah makes sense to me...
Report as
Cal Tex, that spark came from the people. It was stolen at the end of a gun. The people could have lit their own fire without having all the matches confiscated by big gov.
Report as
I have paid taxes all my life and never once at the end of gun. I have no idea what that comment was about.

So if the people always had the power to provide that spark, why did we end up in such a severe economic depression? Virtually of that money you and I paid into bail-outs has been repaid. The thriving economy which results from making investments in work projects will repay that investment several time over. But if you don't want the government to have access to your money, then move to the mountains of Idaho and live off the grid.

Raise the taxes especially on the wealthy, cut unnecessary programs, put some money into American energy (preferably green) and cut back on the defense that is used to guard our oil rigs off in foreign nations. That's my idea anyway.
