cut back it doesn't have too be pbs, some of the stupid programs could go the study of a flys sex life and these federally funded studies, foreign aid to SOME countries, there is billions in waste that could go
Cut back spending starting with Congress. Freeze on wages, pay into their health care like the rest of us and be given a generic set of furniture for their offices that they have to leave behind when end of term.
Spending moves our economy! If we don't spend we go under because it drives our economy! Raising taxes won't help the people who live here and cutting spending also won't help the people living here.
America just needs to spend correctly and invest in surer deals not the horrible loans and other bonds that led to our crash.
After all we can "outspend" our depression for a time; but you can't cut back just yet even if we wanted too because we are growing in debt not shedding it! Once we become more economically safe we should cut back though!
Cut spending! We spend more on defense then the next 9 top spending nations combined, are they in imminent danger of attack? No. We have bases worldwide and only 5 are critical to the war on terrorism. We have 11 Carrier task force groups active in the world, each cost billions of dollars to manufacture and hundreds of millions more each year to operate. We GIVE billions of dollars to foreign nations, and many of them hate us. Since the next big war will be one of finance and cyber warfare we would be strengthening our defense by strengthening our economy. If we simply reduced defense spending by 20% we would balance our budget overnight, but of course we didn't heed Eisenhower's warning 50 years ago so I don't believe we will now. This means an increase in taxes, because cutting to deeply into domestic programs will have dire, long term effects on our economy. We are kidding ourselves if we think having a large armed force is going to keep us safe from nations that can simply buy us too beat us.
You have to raise taxes to pay for everyone on welfare. If people just dont feel like working... we have to support them. To do that, we have to raise taxes to do it. ANYTHING that you get free from the government is not free. A taxpayer is paying for it. I am not talking about everyone on welfare, wanting to be on it. I am talking about the very large majority that would just rather be on welfare then work like the rest of us.
We need to do both. Obviously we need to trim away all the waste we possibly can--and if the trimming isn't hurting a significant number of people, then we need to trim until it does. Now it may seem counter intuitive for the government to spend even more money during an economic downturn, but that is the one time when government spending actually makes sense. For one, more people are hurting, so more aid is necessary. Second, government works projects serve to help get money into the pockets of the population, which in turn produces more demand for consumer goods, which in turn causes companies to increase production and hire more workers, which in turn brings tax revenue back to the government to repay the initial investment.
Raise the taxes especially on the wealthy, cut unnecessary programs, put some money into American energy (preferably green) and cut back on the defense that is used to guard our oil rigs off in foreign nations. That's my idea anyway.
