The historical Dracula was Prince Vladislaus Dracula of Wallachia AKA Vlad the third AKA Vlad Tepes (The Impaler). But he was only called Impaler after his death. Now there is no legend of him being a vampire but in Romania he is viewed as a hero and a Romanian poem ends with "Dracula, where are you now?" There's also a legend that in Romania's darkest hour he will rise from his grave to defend it. Again, this had nothing to do with vampirism. However, eerily, in 1931 there was an attempt to exhume his body and all they found in his grave were animal bones.
