How come humans only like beautiful things?

I was reading a book, and it was so sad, there was this deformed man and everyone was afraid of him, even though he was a kind and caring person. And it made me wonder why don't people love the "ugly" things too? It's not fair, every one deserves to be loved. It would be better to be blind so you could never show bias based on appearance. :/

It's not all humans.
And I think it's just natural. Humans tend to like things that are more visually appealing... Genetic..

Studies show men prefer brunettes. Blond hair is a generic mutation which is not favored.

In biology we learn about natural selection. Someone who has more muscles in a mans case or wider hips in a girls case is more naturally attractive to us whether we realize it or not. Not to be rude but if someone is completely crippled natural selection would want to choose against those genes and remove its disadvantage (assuming its genetic)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So what you may consider ugly may be considered beautiful for someone else.

It really is a question of instinct, natural selection, and biology. Humans have to work hard to use our higher brains to look past physical defects in living creatures in order to gain an appreciation of them.

Every person has a different view of what is considered beautiful. Some like the "typical" beauty while others like odd, strange, and unique beauty. Same word...different meaning for different people.

I don't define beauty by the way someone or something looks! everyone is beautiful in their own way regardless of how they look on the outside!!!

Yes, the story of the elephant man is a very sad one indeed.
Most people can't see past appearances sadly.

It's not all humans......I mean I wouldn't be afraid of a guy who was deformed. But that may be just me. I don't know.

The very words "ugly" and "pretty" imply bias towards appearance. People don't like the beautiful because it is called beautiful. They like the beautiful and that is why they call it beautiful. Also human nature, deformations may be due to disease or other hazards so we are naturally weary of them for self-preservation reasons. and we aren't attracted to them because the problems causing unattractiveness could spread to any children and leave them with the disease or deformation. If everyone was blind we may start feeling the beauty and ugliness of people?

The world is full of corrupt! Most people base everything on appearance, no mater if its good or not!

As a whole, humans are trying to purify their species. By phasing out the ugly, they (in effect) become beautiful. I don't really care about outward appearance, however. To me, the human mind is more beautiful than the body. Now sometimes there are exceptions, but in general the mind intrigues me the most.
