the people living in America wanted to leave the home country of England and start a new nation. The southern states wanted to split from the northern states and start a new nation

In a way; at the time it started the "United States" were British colonies, part of the British Empire. It was two parts of the same empire fighting against each other. So, a "civil" war. Until the part in North America won the war; then they were two separate entities. The next time they went to war, it was just a war. That was in 1812, I believe.

Both involved one group of people breaking away from another group. Both were motivated primarily due to economic reasons. Both included a small army out witting a larger one. Both involved the threat of European involvement, however only the Revolution saw it happen. There are several more minor similarities but those are the most relevent.

But the southern army ultimately did not outwit the north... And i thought the civil war did involve foreign aid to the north... Didn't England or france help in blockading the southern ports and essentially starving the south into surrender.
