During lent Catholics fast and don't eat meat on ash wednesday or fridays. We do this because Jesus died on the cross and suffered so we can have eternal life. In a way we figure the least we can do is sacrafice not eating meat and only eating one meal a day.
my husband would know better, but it has something to do with back in jesus' time meat being a luxury and fish the common thing, i think. you could go to catholic answers on www.catholic.com. they'll know.
Symbolizes sacrifice they say!.....but when my parents were growing up it was no meat every Friday of the year..not just lent!!.....and I believe nowhere on the Bible does it say "do not eat meat in Fridays "...I believe it says "Friday should be a day of fish" fish Fridays are cool but I don't follow religion anymore ...I like to use my brain and open my mind!!
