Why can't Catholics eat meat today?

I'm Christian and my mom is super religious catholic. she's not eating meat. why?

Report as

Because it is the beginning of Lent which is a religious holiday. People fast throughout Lent. And on Fridays and today, Ash Wednesday, people don't eat meat, they eat FISH.

During lent Catholics fast and don't eat meat on ash wednesday or fridays. We do this because Jesus died on the cross and suffered so we can have eternal life. In a way we figure the least we can do is sacrafice not eating meat and only eating one meal a day.

Actually you do it because a pope in the 800s was trying to revive the flagging fishing industry and benefit a relative.

my husband would know better, but it has something to do with back in jesus' time meat being a luxury and fish the common thing, i think. you could go to catholic answers on www.catholic.com. they'll know.

Nope- politics. A pope in the 800s was trying to promote the flagging fishing industry.

Symbolizes sacrifice they say!.....but when my parents were growing up it was no meat every Friday of the year..not just lent!!.....and I believe nowhere on the Bible does it say "do not eat meat in Fridays "...I believe it says "Friday should be a day of fish"
fish Fridays are cool but I don't follow religion anymore ...I like to use my brain and open my mind!!

It's one of those old, weird traditions. It feels Biblical, but what it has to do with religion, I don't know. Maybe no one does.
