What is the best kind of snake to get for a first time owner with young children ages 4 thru 9?

Report as

Mexican king snake. It's a shiny black, badass looking snake, doesn't get dangerously big. It bites, but nothing to go to the hospital over

I seen them and I think they look cool, but if they bite then I think my kids would freak out and kill the snake... Do they bite only if they feel threatened or are they just that way in general?

i would say nothing to big or poisonous so maybe a grass snake or a smaller non venomous snake

Snakes are meant to be in the wild not kept in captivity. Not a good pet. A cage is not any kind of life for any living thing.

I agree with this as well, the only reason I am asking is because my husband and my kids are wanting to get one so I am thinking about getting one for them..

I've owned snakes and they seemed pretty fine living in the cages I had. One even escaped once. It came back.

I am just afraid of getting a snake and it getting out and then coiling up around my kids and them not being able to yell for help... I would be there the whole time, but with kids you cant be everywhere at all times especially when you have more then one and you have things to do..

probably a corn snake or a gopher snake they are pretty awesome and usually don't bite.. (I can't say they don't bite because of course they are animals and there is always a chance of them biting) but they aren't poisonous. lizards are pretty cool too. I have a bearded dragon and they are probably one of the most calm animals you'll ever have.

The guys at the store that we went to said to get a normal ball python because they only get to be about 5 foot long... They said that those and the corn snakes are about the best ones to get with young children, I don't know about the bearded dragon... I don't know squat about them.

bearded dragons are really easy and live on mostly vegetables, crickets, and mealworms. then all they need is a heat lamp maybe a UV lamp and they'll be fine. males only get to be MAYBE a foot long. but they are pretty boring I think the kids would like a snake more... dragons will run around a bit but will also just sit there, its CAN be a really boring pet, hope I helped! :)

You did help, thank you. My 2 younger girls are a little scared of snakes but they want one to ne their pet to get to know them better. I just think the bearded dragons would not be a good pet to have... Too boring and thats just going based off of what I have seen at the reptile stores that I have been to...

do you're research, find one that is not poisonous and considered docile. and still get a locking cage
