Have you tamed it, or are you just reaching in after it? You have to tame the hamster just like any other animal.
Are you waking it up? Hamsters are very grumpy when you wake them up.
How big is the cage? If it's less than a 12" x 30" tank, the hamster may be cage aggressive because its too small.
Do you wash your hands before trying to pick it up? If your hands smell like food or have a strong perfume smell on them, the hamster may nibble out of curiosity. They're very scent-driven.

Here's some great advice on how to tame your hamster:

Well, then you need to tame it. It's ok, it just takes time and patience. Use a jar or cup to move your hamster to a play bin and let him run around. Just let your hand hang over the side and don't move your hand when he comes to sniff.

Later you can start feeding little pieces of his food to him with your hands. Just pinch the piece and let him come up to your hand and take the food.

try giving the hamster a carrot or something to chew on while you lift the hamster up. Good luck!

Good idea, except that some species of hamsters have a tendency towards diabetes, so carrots (which have a lot of sugar) can be very bad for them. Bell pepper pieces or green beans are better.

my grandfather has a cat who used to bite when we tried to pet him. my grandfather, if the cat bit anyone, he would swat him gently on the nose. it doesn't hurt him, just scares him. that's how he learned not to bite. try that on your hamster maybe?

Make sure you are not wearing perfume or hand lotion when you handle him. Sometimes, it's the smell that bothers them.
