Sadly I saw someone who claimed to be 40, and their spelling was atrocious.

It's awful! I can hardly understand what some are saying. So sad... Using ones brain has become old fashion I guess.

In my college English class, they did a brief review on they're, their, there, and you're and your, as well as where, were and we're. I'm thinking, if people don't know this by now.... Wow...

What amuses me most is when people are absolutely determined to ignore spellcheck and think that it's OK. I know I mess up on occasion, but at least I make an effort to reread what I wrote before hitting the "send" button.

19 year old on my instigram posted a drawing someone else did, with the caption of their user name, and "grate work". Ouch >.<

I'm not sure if "gonna" is even a word...but that's about as bad as I get!
Report as
Haha it's not I don't think. I'll confess to putting that down if I'm texting and being lazy, but I won't do that on here. I think kids should have their grammar down at LEAST before jr high. I remember the majority of the kids in my class paid no attention during the grammar session.

Well I thought they did... at least they try. Unfortunately there are no guarantees that it actually gets absorbed.

Well if rappers don't speak properly, and they're millionaires, then why should kids even try? (Playing devil's advocate haha!)

It's not that they don't each English in school, I don't think kids want to learn and that has shifted the bell curve of acceptability to the left.

Also with spelling, what doesn't spell correct for you now days. I know my spelling has become atrocious since I know I just have to spell words close to the one I want and it'll fix it for me.

Yes we do. I teach middle school. I'm on medical leave right now. The kids' behavior in class is deplorable. Not all of them but enough so we waste a lot of time on discipline. I am not sure if I want to go back at this point.

Middle school? You should get combat pay for that!

Combat pay plus a stipend!! I teach elementary, but I was at the middle school for two years. There is not enough money in the world to entice me to go back to the middle school!!

Yes they do, but it isn't "swag" to speak proper English.

They do, but texting is killing it faster than they can teach it. Someone posted a great example of punctuation matters on my fb page the other day.

Some people find inspiration in cooking their family and their dogs.

Great example of why we need to teach punctuation in school!

Nice to see that someone still uses the Oxford comma.

Great example. Can't say I'm on board with the Oxford comma.

I teach it in my classroom! :) Honestly, I'm seeing a push to teach spelling, grammar, and punctuation differently than they have been taught in the past. Some teach spelling as learning root words, prefixes, and suffixes rather than memorizing how to spell words. Grammar and punctuation are sometimes taught as mini-lessons while writing a story rather than full length lessons.
