Tony ... ever read the book "Dial 911 and Die"?
It's put out by JPFO.org
Most states don't even require police to respond to 911 as a priority.

Hi. Happy! Happy! Happy! Happy! Happy Valentines Day! HURRAY!!!!!

I'm not kidding,... I WAS just thinking about you and the lovely Mrs. Tony driving home from the store last night. I know weird time for you two to cross my mind, but I was buying Java Chip ice cream for Don, and the radio station "Jack, 93.1" was playing Van Halen every 1/2hour for some reason. The corralation is really wierd... but I thought after the 3 song, "I haven't seen ol' Tony around... I hope he is flying home for valentine's day! REALLY!! I did! Happy! Happy! To you and your lovely wife and growing like weeds children! I'm pleased I caught you!
Report as
Oh, and on your answer note, Yes, I've heard you use this cliche' before. Not only do I agree, but it is also very accurate. Let's hope we don't have any Valentine Day Masacres this year or any. Give someone you know a hug.
Report as
Walt, I can say I've heard of this book, sounds interesting though.

MnM, I wish I could find a radio staion that plays ANY good rock n' roll, ever station either plays pop, rap or country :-(
Report as
The worst is when they try to combine all 3 ... Nothing like a good jam session to a rap song, gone pop, with a country twang thrown in!
I may have shared this w/you before, but it made such an impression on Don and me, I going to again. One of the most brilliantly simple answers I've EVER heard a rock star's kid say was Eddie Van Halen's son. Rolling Stone Magazine did an interview with him many years ago and asked: "So, why don't you play the gutiar?" And the kid said, after a moment of amazement, "Do you know who my Dad is?" Daa. Poetic and Perfect.

Because they're paranoid and afraid.
But instead of dealing with their fear, they try to present an uber-macho persona to hide behind.

It has to do with self defense. Nothing to do with this being macho or paranoid. When somebody breaks into my home or robs me the police cannot respond quickly enough to save me. Thus having a gun means I can protect myself and/or my family.

Which well-regulated militia do you belong to?
Report as
Do you really think that referred to a government regulated militia?
I mean, after having to fight for their Rights from a government ... you really think they meant the government should control the very means to fight against it?

Seems kind of self-defeating, to me.

But I guess it's possible. After all, the Jews say "never again" (will they be subject to a government genocide) - yet rely on the good intentions of government to protect them.
Report as
wickedpissah
Hey. I'm just quoting that one section of the United States Constitution that gun supporters love to cite so often.
The 2nd Amendment clearly says :A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state......."
Don't blame me if you don't like what it says. I didn't write it.
The Founding Fathers wrote it.
What do you have against the Constitution?
Report as
liberalmediasucks
The second amendment doesn't state the militia's right to bear arms shall not be infringed. It states the right to bear arms shall not be infringed. Speaking about every law abiding citizens. Our founding fathers armed us and have us that right for many reasons. Most importantly to protect ourselves from criminals and a tyrannical government. It's sickening how leftists try to twist The Constitution to their liking. If you don't like guns don't own one or move to Canada.
Report as
wickedpissah
LMS- So, once again, you choose to only quote the part of the Constitution you approve of, while conveniently ignoring the first half of the 2nd Amendment.
"A well-regulated militia being necessary tot he security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."
See?
Who's twisting the Constitution?
I'm quoting it directly. How is that twisting?
YOU are the one trying to ignore the very words that the Founders of this great nation wrote in our Constitution.
So..... which well-regulated militia do you belong to?

Hi. I do like Torngren's train of thought. It is better to be ready. We can toss the: "should, would, and could of" around. Those are speculation and judgement calls on someone's actions. The obvious still remains. The good guys will take on the responsibility of having a weapon. The bad guys, no matter what, will still be able to acquire the guns, one way or the other. It's the way it's always been. I am a very strong believer in this one blanket and blatent fact: If anyone is going to pick up a gun, learn how to shoot it before shooting blindly into the sky. It's NOT Hollywood. Everyone may not get up and walk away. Sometimes, Reality Bites.

How is "self defense" a dumb reason for gun ownership/carry?
Report as
Some folks will never get it
Report as
Because if you just shoot someone who you ASSUME is about to attack you... You are in the wrong... If you shoot someone who broke into your house to steal a laptop... You are in the wrong... If you shoot a man attacking another man... Again you are in the wrong... You don't know if the attacker was just attack by the "victim" and you don't know why the attack took place... You can miss aim and shoot an innocent man, woman or child...
Report as
I've carried for 35 yrs, never shot anyone.
Report as
I'm "wrong" to assume someone who broke into my house, when I am home, intends to do me bodily harm ... and take measures to prevent that?

I suppose you think I should take time to ask them their intentions ... after they already used force against my, by the mere act of breaking in.

How about when they're coming at me with a weapon? Is that enough, or should I wait until they actually stab/shoot/whatever me or my kin?
Report as
If you shoot someone that broke into yuor house you are in the right
Report as
If you shoot someone who is attacking some one else thats not self defense so that point isnt valid
Report as
actually, wildcat ... under the law, that IS considered the same as self-defense.

"Self defense is dumb"? You simply don't get it. I guess you believe it's somehow morally superior to be a victim when a thug or group of thugs break into your home, attack you, or try to rob you. Some people have little or no grasp of reality.
Report as
Great my comment was removed... Someone breaking in dosnt mean you should shoot them... Get a metal base ball bat... It could just be a family member or a friend staying over... Gees... I'd love to see what would happen if a gun lover stepped into a surprise party... Don't get me wrong... I'm happy you have guns... I like reading about shootings... And I don't care about the mothers and father and children who get shot... Please... If anything keep your gun control at a low...

Stars Helper, for the quotation marks around "self-defense." It is dumb, bc the evidence indicates that guns, even those bought for "self-defense", are more likely to be used for crime, for suicide, or accidentally, than to prevent crimes.

Its our constitutional right. The vast majority of our over 300 million guns do not commit crimes. in fact, the dubious distinction of having the most gun violence goes to Honduras, at 68.43 homicides by firearm per 100,000 people, even though it only has 6.2 firearms per 100 people. Their guns are remarkably active!
Other parts of South America and South Africa also rank highly, while the United States is somewhere near the mid-range. Still, America sees far more gun violence than countries in Europe, and Canada, India and Australia, which is perhaps how it gets its bloody reputation among comparatively peaceful nations. When a person kills another in the United States, though, he or she generally uses a gun: 60 percent of U.S. homicides occur using a firearm, which is the 26th-highest rate in the world. (In other gun-permeated countries, such as Finland (45.3 guns per 100 people), only about 19 percent of homicides involve a firearm. So, when guns kill people, they almost always seem to have another person at the other end of the gun; is that person involved in drugs? Is he/she mentally challenged? Did they obtain their gun illegally? The minority of gun violence is one of these last two categories, but the majority is all three.

From my experience, there are two types of people who carry guns.

1. They genuinely feel the need of one for self protection, such as if they work late or pass through a bad part of town.

2. Just for the sake of carrying a gun, i.e. making a point about 2nd amendment rights, because it looks cool, out of habit or a social standard, or because they feel "tough."

Hi. Many have good points ahead of me. I will also add, it's not only men, but women. A lot of this stems from fear. Instead of "loving thy neighbor," in a good way, our trust issue with one another has deteriorated to the point: We don't open our doors & help our neighbors, we find them vandalizing our property, torturing our pets, reeking havoc in our neighborhoods, scaring our children, etc. It is a sad state of affairs. Nary a person has respect for each other, or any respect for themselves. The "live and let live," thought has, unfortunately, long gone. On a happier note, happy valentine's day. Try to remember someone you love and smile. Maybe even give them a jingle on the telephone, or drop a note in the mail. Have a great day!

The only people who use guns to hurt others are criminals and the mentally ill. Criminals aren't likely to follow any laws placed on guns, and we need to figure out how to find and help the mentally ill.

I'm not sure of the actual numbers, but I think you would find that a very small percentage of people in the US carry guns. This isn't a movie! I heard somebody say just this morning that only 20% of us actually OWN guns, so a lot fewer actually carry them around.

We carry firearms because you only need them once in a life time to make carrying every day worth it. Everywhere gun rules are are strict crime goes up and it is easy to see. This is why Chicago is so safe! Gun control only enables criminals.

Too much freedom, 2nd amendment for example, and 99.99% of the people use them to harm others on purpose. If I was going to hold a gun, I would only use it for fun, and shoot like targets(Not human targets of course). Also, if I was going to have some self defense weapon, it would be like a tazer, so I don't accidentally kill someone.
