When did valentines day start and why?
St Valentine was a Catholic saint who brought lovers together who would have been kept apart otherwise, I believe for religious reasons.
Florists started it to make money. tis true. it actualy started 270A.D became a tradition in late 1700's. Didn't become the wallet draining holiday till 1950's when florists decided it was a good excuse to make money during a slow time in sales.
Saint valentine is the patron Saint of lovers. It was only natural that being his day (according to Christian belief) exchanges amongst close friends should happen.
Saint Valentine. Look him up, the origin of the day of love. Florists and card makers did not invent it. It's also a feast day in the Catholic Church.
it started at midnight last night and it's our yearly obligation to show affection to those we don't particularly like, and this dilemma ends at midnight...;-)
He was known for secretly marrying couples that the Roman Empire decided couldn't get married.
Today's version is (to quote my wise friend kuuipo) "a Hallmark holiday". In my honest opinion, it's a day to guilt guys into buying overpriced candy and flowers for gals.
