Have you ever spent time at a range firing one? Ever taken one apart and put it back together? Or is your opinion on guns based on what you've gleaned from media reports? I'm not asking this to be a smarty pants...It's a favorite thing for a lot of people (myself included) and if you don't understand that, I am sorry.
It is part of the culture in many areas, particularly South and Western states. Some families still have firearms handed down from generations or were 'spoils" of some war , those will never be surrendered. If the gun abolitionist think they will they are deluded with wishful thinking. This country was really built and tamed on the backbone of firearms historically,
We hunt big game/birds. your second amend RIGHT is not for hunting but so YOU can protect YOUR 1st 3rd 4th 5th 6th amend rights from a corrupt or abusive govt. Is our govt corrupt? The patriot act dissolves amend 1-6. poor/mid class pay higher % in taxes than wealthy. Is it abusive? If they decide to come takemommy/ daddy away because you have more than 3 days food, would you want to protect him? Yes having more tham 3 days food makes you a terrorist under the patriot act
Our culture has romanticized the gun. Leading up to the civil war the gun was looked at as the tool it is, no different then an axe or a saw, after with the pacifying of the west we began a true affection for it. With the tales of the gunslinger and the settlers fighting off the hoards of "savage" indians, fed by the dime novel, we began to be fascinated by the gun. This love has since been fueled by books and films to become part of the American heritage. Today we maintain our cultural addiction for the gun by brandishing the second amendment, like an alcoholic that claims to be able to stop drinking when ever he wants, but just not right now, and blames everyone but himself for all the problems it causes. Like the sword before it this love story will fade when the next technology arrives to replace it, at least until that new tech beguiles us, at which point the story will repeat itself.
I'm too busy reloading my handguns to give you a long answer. Guns are our Constitutional right and means of protecting ourselves from criminals or a tyrannical government. Guns don't kill people, people kill people. The majority of the anti gun clowns in the media don't have one, nor do the know much about them. At the same time many of these anti gun celebrities and politicians have armed body guards.
