I'm buying a gun for home defence and I will also use it for a back up hunting gun so a 357 sig or a 9mm

357 sig. It's almost as powerful ballistically as a 357 magnum. It's basicslly a "supercharged" 9mm. Like that? Supercharged? Made it up myself.

I actually read today where .38super rivals .357mag in characteristics.

a 9mm for home defense and a back up hunting gun sounds suitable.

I'm not sure what a 'back-up hunting gun' is. In some states, you are only permitted to carry one firearm while hunting.

I would personally go for the .357.

A 9mm and 357 are the same size projectile, the 357 has more so called knock down than 9mm

Same diameter, not same size.

Be sure to check your hunting regs as to what types/calibers of handguns are legal to use for your intended game. You don't mention deer? squirrel? etc.

Ohio laws say a handgun used for deer hunting must have a barrel of at least 6" and firing a straight-walled cartridge of .357mag or larger. Your state may have similar regs. Check it out. Happy hunting-

I'd go with the 357.

Id go with the 357 sig my dad and uncle told me stories from when they were in the Army and my dad said that he's seen a guy shot by a 9mm six times and still fighting like nothing touched him 9mm's are not man stoppers I strongly recommend the 357 sig

Ever been shot??

It's about shot placement more than caliber... Well that is what the army told me.

9mm because the .357 sig might over penetrate in a house, and if you are using it as a back up for hunting try using cast bullets, they penetrate well and will be a very humane way to take an animal... And for your home try hollow points or like federal guard dog. (Just my opinion)
