Should plastic bags be banned from grocery stores?

I don't know what category to categorize this question in..Miscellaneous it is! I don't think plastic bags should be banned from grocery stores. Really? Charging us 5 cents per bag? (large brown paper bags) From where I'm living, they banned plastic bags to redirect funds. I know plastic bags are destroying the environment polluting waterways and other natural areas and killing off animals.

Well...Plastic bags aren't the only thing killing the environment, many other things are as well, but still Plastic in general isn't of much help to the environment. So, plastic bags should be banned...Unless the users recycle them properly, but until we can make that guarantee for everyone, they should not be used.

HelloPikachu
Well true...true, but if the people don't just throw the bags on the road, then cats won't get harmed ( I am a cat fan ) so as long as they don't litter them or don't put them near a stove! :)

I know a chain of stores that do not supply any type of bags, sacks, or boxes. You must bring your own

YES. Plastics take 100-1000 years to decompose from a landfill. It's not healthy to burn and paperbags can be recycled and reused. Look at it for the bigger picture and not the minor inconvenience it causes. The future depends on the things we do right now.

plastic bag is a stable polymer. microbial action is not possible on such stable polymer so it takes a large time for its decomposition in addition to that it also can't be recycled. therefore some people burn the bags which releases Carbon Dioxide and during the production of plastic bag oil or fuel is used for energy. For production of 1 plastic bag 200 grams of carbon dioxide is released.
thus its production as well as its burning releases CO2 which is a green house gas and causes Global Warming. therefore they are banned.
although they cost little but they cause high danger.

I don't think so. They are very useful, and as long as recycled, we'll be fine. Besides, ten sacks of groceries can be a ten piece set of personalized luggage! Just kidding :-)

No, plastic bags don't kill the environment, people do! Just like guns! It isn't the bags fault that it isn't recycled properly...it is human kind who should take responsibility for our inaction. A plastic bag shouldn't end up in the landfill to take 100 years to decompose...it should be properly recycled! Even in my small town, the Wal*Mart and grocery stores have big bins to put your bags in right at the entrance to the store! If we as humans would recycle and reuse, we could reduce what goes into a landfill by a great amount!

In a book written by someone who worked at the CDC, they mentioned that harmful bacteria collects in the cloth bags and they must be sanitized in hot water regularly which adds phosphates ( I think that was the term used. May have been something else) to the water supply, bad for env. etc. I guess that makes sense since they touch grocery carts and food items. Plastic is easily recycled and turned into curbs and what not but I had not heard that they are spontaneously combustible unless near a heat source like a burner. Guess we'd better learn to juggle to get our groceries out of the store!

I think they shouldn't ban plastic bags from stores because many people use it. Also, there are many other things ruining the environment. Plus, we can reuse them in many ways! So, if plastic bags were banned, the only choice would be paper bags. Now, paper bags, we can't reuse them and they can get ruined easily.

HelloPikachu

I don't think they should ban bags because plastic bags are useful in some ways and you can reuse them by giving them back to the store (unbroken) or you can use them for garbage bags! If you use paper bags they can tear easily and they are not so good at being little garbage bags...but you can recycle but don't you want it to be useful? :) There is nothing wrong with plastic bags! They rule!! Just don't waste them! :)

I don't think they should ban them but I do think they should use them less or make a bag friendlier to the environment such as the reusable ones you can get sometimes.

it is important Yes Today when we go shopping, we will see a lot of people carrying their shopping bags made of plastic. Plastic bags are really convenient for all of us to carry things we have bought. In contrast, there are many disadvantages of using plastic bags. If you know that plastic bags have negative impacts for our environment, I am sure that reducing the use of plastic bags will be happened soon. As we know, using plastic bags are really convenient for all of us to carry things. In contrast, using bags is increasing the severity of Global Warming that we are confronting at the moment. The plastic bags production uses almost ten percent of the world's annual oil supply. Only few percent of this number is recycled. This means that much of the planet's precious natural resources are being used to produce plastic bags. The chemicals and compounds that go into making plastic bags could also be utilized in a far more effective manner. These two facts show that plastic bag production is a waste of resources. In addition, we can use and hold plastic bags everywhere we need like supermarkets, stores or homes

I'd say yes because they just take up land fills and take FOREVER to decompose and therefore harm the earth BADLY, they should replace 'em with FREE re-usable bags I'd say.
