What is a good way to teach a dog stay and come?

He is a fast learner and knows sit, paw, lay, and rollover, but I am having trouble with stay and come. Any suggestions please?

Well do you have another dog? If so I had this problem with my 2 year old Boston terroir she wouldn't stay or sit and I have another dog she's 4 and a jack russel terroir and anyways my Boston terroir (Bella) wouldn't listen so I made her watch my jack russel (hades) until she got the hang of it but don't make it to where you have to give them treats in order to listen to you make so they can do it with it with out treats :]

Yes I have four dogs, and I'm training my youngest dog which seems like he has a.d.d. I'll make sure he gets the hang of it without treats.

Aww well idk if this well work for u and ur dog but this is what I did to train my dog... When I was teaching her to stay I put her leash on her and tied it to a poll and told her stay(well she couldn't move so she stayed) and I gave her the treat I did it 5x and she was learning it and I tired it 3x without the leash and she learned it... You could do the same

Tell your dog to sit. Then walk away, while staying in sight, if your dog stayed, say "stay" then give it a treat. If not, repeat the process. Teach your dog to stay first, then teach it to come. To teach it to come, tell it to stay, then call over the dog and give it a treat. Simple :)

You might want to try hand signals. My dogs watch my hands, and even though never trained to, they will do whatever my hands tell them to do. >>> One thing people seem to not realize is that animals are smart, and if they love you, they want to do what you want them to do. Give your dog lots of love, and if you get frustrated during training, quit, because your dog knows you are upset, and will be upset too. Make your training time, fun time for the both of you. You don't even need treats, just love. Would you give a child a treat for doing something right? No, you would praise, hug, and show them how proud you are of them. It works the same way with dogs.

Give them a treat when they success. It work for me. Well this sounds funny but it work! I pretend to be a dog by myself like i roll on the floor then i pat myself and feed myself food then i gently pushed my dog and rolled it on the floor then give it a threat. Its work! Later i say roll the i rolled it. Now when i say roll, it actually roll!

My suggestion is to get a helper that the dog knows and loves too. Have the helper stay with the dog when you tell him to sit stay. Take a step or two away and call him to you with come (or what every you choose as the command), have the helper keep the dog there until you call for him, not really keeping his attention just lightly holding him. After he starts getting it step further away and start again. Remember be consistent, keep eye contact and patients will go far. Also the hand signals are a good idea, use those together. Love or treats make good rewards both works, sometimes favorite toys or play work as a reward, what ever your dog responds to use it. When you have worked on it for a while take a break for your sake and the dogs too. Too much, too long can ware them and of course you out, making it hard to learn any lesson.

Petco and other pet stores offer training for your dog(s). You can have your dog sit down somewhere. Begin to walk backwards, and say stay, stay, stay, stay. If he doesn't listen, then scold him. If he stays at an appropriate distance, then tell him to "come here, boy!" Feed him a treat, and repeat this. If he doesn't learn, you may want to either teach him when he is older or take him into a trainer.

keep treats in your pockets and back a few feet away and look your dog in the eye and say sit in a commanding voice not in a weak voice

I suggest purchasing any of the training books by Richard A. Wolters. I have 2 labs and trained both using the methods in "Water Dog". Simple, loving, caring instructions that produce great results. I have had people comment on how well behaved our dogs are and how well they obey and ask how I trained them. His books can be found on Amazon and Ebay.

Honestly i had the same problem to, you make them sit, then slowly walk away while still watching them and then if they follow you before your orders say in a deep voice "NO, STAY" and then point the finger at them while doing this, if they listen the next time give them a reward, like treats, a bone or extra tea/breakfast.
PS. WHE POINTING THE FINGER AT THEM THEY MAY THINK IT IS A JOKE AND BITE UR FINGER, SO BE CAREFUL
Hope this helps.

hold a treat in your left fist then use your right hand to make him sit. tap two fingers on his nose and say "stay" then walk about three feet in front of him and put the treat on the ground. if he comes rushing towards it, pick up the treat hold it to your chest and say "no" repeat the first two steps until he stays. once he stays, put the treat on the ground and say "come" then the dog will probably see this as a trigger word and come right away. if not, point to the treat and say go get it boy/girl! after a while start giving the dog love and praise instead of treats.

Well with mine I would inch further away while saying wait but don't I've use the word or it won't work then when I was about 6 ft out I "enter dogs name here) come and pulled the leash a bit. Reward with praise not treats. Only use treats every 3-4 times
