Does the depo shot start working right after you get it??

Report as

Not necessarily, and in any case it does not protect against STDs so you should always be using a condom as well, just for back up. The following is from Planned Parenthood...

"If you get the birth control shot within the first seven days after the start of your period, you are protected from pregnancy immediately. If you get the shot within five days after miscarriage or an abortion, or within three weeks after giving birth, you are protected from pregnancy immediately. Otherwise, you need to use some form of backup birth control — like a condom, female condom, diaphragm, sponge, or emergency contraception (morning after pill) — for the first week after getting the shot."

Also remember that if you are every on antibiotics that makes your birth control weak and you CAN get pregnant during the use and in some cases up to one week after use ask your doctor and or pharmacist. Condoms should always be used because they can protect some STD's and HIV. Not all STD's can be stopped even with use of a condom so always check with your partner and make sure they have been tested after each partner. You should be tested after each partner as well even if your not due for your yearly exam!
