Self-publishing will be a good idea if you have money and resources. This is also good if you are looking to earning some money and want full control over the entire process. On the other hand, "going another route" is one way of just posting your publication to various media or publishers with the hope that someone will like your work and offer to publish it.
"another route" = sending your manuscript to hundreds of publishers ... to compete with thousands of other manuscripts ... hoping it will be read by somebody there ... hoping they will then accept it for publication.
Amazon.com offers publishing. I started to publish one (just to see how it's done) and it's incredibly easy. You can set your price, upload your own cover, and have pretty much all the control. But I think only as a Kindle book, not an actual physical book.
