Any difference between an asteroid and a meteor?

Like they're calling the thing that blew up over Russia a meteor, and they're saying an asteroid will pass 17K miles away from earth later today... What's the difference between the two?

Meteors make contact with the earth's atmosphere, asteroids are pieces of rock that orbit the sun.

Meteors the long tail that is made when an asteroid enters the atmosphere. Asteroids are immediately ripped apart makin the tail.. The sonic boom from meteor is what did damage

Asteroids are considered minor planets in space. meteors are potions of asteroids or former planets that have entered our atmosphere on a trajectory course.. Meteorites are meteors that have actually hit and impacted the earth's surface. They have landed.

The only difference is where these rocky bodies end up. If it enters the earth's atmosphere and burns up, or impacts, it's a meteor. If it keeps on going passing the earth by then it's an asteroid.
