Should the government get rid of coins?

I think it would be a lot faster and easier to buy and pay for things with only cash and since the government really wants to tax us it would save them money by only making paper currency!

NO don't get rid of coins. haha We save all of our coins at the end of the day in a huge jar and even dollar bills, and we use that to go with Christmas money each year. I was shocked at how quickly random coins add up over a year.

Certain coins such as pennies, yes. A penny costs more to create than it is worth...

Yes, please! I would love to see everything rounded to the dollar! Coins are filthy, germ laden disease carriers and a hassle to carry around.

Bank notes are much worse in respect of carrying germs. The places some notes have been and what was smeared on them you really dont want to know... Coins, especially if they are containing copper, are kind of antiseptic, because some metals act like a poison to germs.

Coins are filthy as opposed to bills not being filthy, we have no idea whose come in contact with our currency cash or coins

Yes, pennies! On military bases overseas there are no pennies, you round everything up or down to the nearest nickel.

No. The justification for getting rid of the penny is that it costs more to make than it is worth. So the government (aka our tax dollars) will save $11 million per year by not making them. Prices ending in .01 or .02 are supposed to round down, and .03 and .04 round up.... we are supposed to believe that this balances out, but it will not. Businesses will raise their prices so rounding down won't affect them. Now businesses will make much more than $11 million per year off of us.... so we're going to pay anyway....... Just think - if the average person makes 100 purchases in year, and businesses make an extra penny off each one - that's only a dollar from each of us.... but multiply that by the number of people in Canada - that's $30 million. (In the US its 300 million people - or $300 million dollars in this example!) Good thing we saved $11 million, we'll need it to pay the $30 million in extra costs! Oh yeah - we'll never see that $11 million anyway because the government will use it for something else... so now we're out $41 million.....

You folks dont really believe any shop will round down prices, do you? I've seen it, when we converted from D-Mark to Euro - no business applies the exchange rate to their disadvantage, they rather use the occasion to make a few extra cents profit.

Well someone in our government must have a crush on someone in Canada because we are trying to copy things you guys do and if your statement is true then maybe we will end using pennies and I'm ok with that choice lol!

Actually the gov could save a ton of money by making $1 coins instead of bills. Paper wears out faster

Actually they do make $1 coins but a carrying around $10 in coins would be a pain

True and that's one of the reasons they never took off, in addition to which they were always too close to quarter size but they've done studies that show them saving a (ahem) mint by switching

I always thought it was a great idea but I never thought about having ten of them in my pocket. Interesting point.
