What makes a meteorite or asteroid happen?

The meteorite that just hit Russia, and the asteroid that passed dangerously close to Earth has got me wondering where meteorites and asteroids come from.

A meteorite is an asteroid that enters the earths atmosphere. They come from the Kiper belt, it is a belt of asteroids that orbit the sun between Mars and Jupiter.

Asteroids and meteors are composed of different material and should not be confused. A meteorite is a meteor that has impacted the earth.

The band of asteroids between Mars and Jupiter is called the ASTEROID Belt! The Kuyper Belt is much further out and is associated with comets and Plutoid bodies.

I always thought the Kuyper belt was the inner belt and the Ort cloud was the outer belt? Are there three?

Well basically, giant rocks are constantly floating around space. They are usually too small to be grabbed by the gravity of solar systems/planets, and when Earth crosses the path of one, they collide. Typically, though it burns up in the entrance of Earth's atmosphere.

an asteroid burns up in the Earth's atmosphere a meteor doesn't and will hit the earth

Meteors and asteroids are just, essentially, floating space debris. A meteorite is a meteor that survived its trip through the Earth's atmosphere.

There is tons of debris in space. Once it gets close to Earth's gravitational pull, it starts hurdling toward Earth. Thankfully, most of the time, the immense speed the debris is travelling at causes it to burn up before hitting land. If the asteroid or meteorite is large enough, and doesn't have a chance to burn up before impact, it will hit the planet. It is pretty simple. Nothing too scientific.

A meteorite or asteroid is a big rock that comes from the asteroid belt. It somehow breaks away from that and starts floting around in space.

Asteroids are composed of Rock, Iron and other metallic material that are left over debris from the formation and destruction of planets. Meteors are composed of rock, silica and other materials a meteorite is a meteor that has impacted. And comets are composed of rock and ice the ice fragments and melts slightly as the comets gets bombarded by cosmic dust hence the tail behind a comet.

What makes an asteroid or meteor HAPPEN is that bodies in the Asteroid Belt bump into each other and some are knocked out of orbit. These are attracted inwards by the Sun, and if the asteroid collides with Earth's atmosphere, it is called a meteor. If it is big enough to survive the flaming passage through our atmosphere, it is called a meteorite.
