How much ram can I put into my old computer? is there software that can tell me?

The computer is about 8 yrs. old, running XP Pro. There is only space for 2 RAM chips and would like to max out the RAM to speed it up. I don't want to get a new computer.

You're probably running 32 bit XP - which won't access any more than 3 gigs (or is it 4?). Here is a link to crucial - they have software on their site which will analyze your motherboard and tell you what kind of ram and how much - you can install in your computer. Keep in mind you can buy a whole new decent system for $3-400, some of the ram upgrades can be expensive, especially for older systems where ram may not be manufactured anymore (though perhaps you can get used).

You can buy a pair of 2GB RAM because the computer has 2 slots for RAM, which will make it have 4GB RAM. However, you should make sure that the RAMs are compatible. This means you should get either DDR-1 or DDR-2.
