Is osteoporosis passed on ? Can a mother having the illness pass it on to her son , so to speak ?

It is a genetic condition, so yes, you could be at risk. Osteoporosis affects mostly older woman - because of a shortage of calcium in their diet. Make sure you have calcium fortified with vitamin D in your diet. Eat right and exercise and don't worry too much about it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osteoporosis

Yes, if the family is predisposed to a vitamin D deficiency, the tendency to have osteoporosis can be inherited.
