What country is the setting for the short story "Through the Tunnel" by Doris Lessing?

"Through the Tunnel" a short story written by Doris Lessing and published in the New Yorker in 1955 does not actually name the foreign country of the setting. Are there suggestions where it might be?

It is not possible to determine what country is the setting of this story. This is because the author brought it up as a fiction and thus uses complex characters in discovering their identity, which too was a harsh experience to them.
