I would like to know if when you are working an 8 hour shift is your employor required to give you at least a 15min break .

Report as

In my home state of Massachusetts the requirement is a 30 minute unpaid lunch break and two paid fifteen minute breaks. Check your state's labor laws.

On a normal 8 hour shift, you're supposed to get a 30 minute lunch or dinner break, & 2 15 minute breaks or a combination of time to equal the requirements

Google "labor laws" for your state. You will then know and you'll have "ammo" as well.

In PA if you work more than 5 hours you should get a 30min unpaid meal break.

Federal law states any employee working 8 hours per day is entitled to two 15 minute breaks, this is not including your lunch break which is set by your employer. However, many employers do not adhere to the "break" law.

fritzmerde is right. There are Federal requirements that must be followed. Although your half hour lunch break is not required to be a paid break.

As others have said. Yes there are federal laws allowing you these breaks. However what do you do for work? Is it more informal so you're able to use the rest room at will? Sometimes the employers feel a break isn't required under those circumstances. I work in such an environment. To me I'd rather have that freedom than scheduled breaks.

Union, that was my first thought. We are not machines!

We used to have unions but Rappin Ronnie Regan the failed movie star president took care of that.

And our rock star republican gov. Scott walker here in Wisconsin screwed our unions big time.
