Why do lawyers wear black and white?

Is the white for truth, and black for lies?
And what about that wig they wear, why do they wear them?
Enlighten me.

They do? I could've sworn Ace Attorney wore a red suit. I don't know. I think maybe it's because it's a formal thing. I mean, it's formal to go to formal occasions in a black and white dress suit. When you go to a court case, you're not there to express yourself or to be different, you're there to give a case. As for the wig, I have no idea what you're talking about.

the wigs go back to colonial days (1700's etc)...very rare today (thank God!)...:-)

Because those were the only colors they had of suits in the 1900's and kept it a tradition.... I would assume.

I take it you live in the UK, or another British Commonwealth nation? The black represents the authority of the court, the white is the purity of the truth, the red that the judges wear represents the power to determine the truth of the law. It goes back to the time of the English civil war and the Magna Carta.

I missed the "wig" part, that was a sign of dominance or virility, it was a cultural item not related to the law. Being bald was seen as a sign of weakness or fragility so I assume the law did not wish to project such an image.
