How do I know if I should get an air conditioner or a heat pump? I live on the east coast of NC and have about 1600 feet of space to cool.

If you have more winter days with the temperature above 35 degrees than below 35 degrees you should purchase the Trane Heat pump with 15kw auxiliary heat strip (for the days when the temperature is below 35 degrees). The AC contractor can sit down with you and guide you through the process and show you where the savings are and how to achieve the most favorable comfort/price balance. If you haven't seen the new high efficiency Heat pumps with auxilliary heat strips you will be amazed at how far they have advanced.

You need a professional to do a heat loss analysis. Based on your climate and home environment, they can determine if a heat pump will fit the bill or if you'll need a real air conditioner.

Depending with the weather and climate that you are experiencing, you should carry out a heat loss analysis. That way, you will be able to determine which of the two is most important.
