Depression is a serious mental illness, and the truth is that there is very little you can do to help.
However, you can offer to take the person out somewhere nice, somewhere with no stress involved, (maybe a picnic or something else outdoors). It's very good for depressed people to get up and do something, but many will not want to. If the person tells you "no," don't push the issue. Just offer your support and your love, and don't blame yourself. It's not something you did or did not do.
Push them to get anti-depressants, and if they make an excuse, make a drs appt for them with their dr, and if they can't afford it, find out about a sliding scale clinic. Offer to drive them to the appt and get those meds. It will probably make all the difference in the world, unless this is just a person who wants to share their misery with everybody else and doesn't really want to change.
