How do you deal with someone with depression?

Report as

Depression is a serious mental illness, and the truth is that there is very little you can do to help.

However, you can offer to take the person out somewhere nice, somewhere with no stress involved, (maybe a picnic or something else outdoors). It's very good for depressed people to get up and do something, but many will not want to. If the person tells you "no," don't push the issue. Just offer your support and your love, and don't blame yourself. It's not something you did or did not do.

You let them be. You can try to help them... You might have to deal with their moodiness. When someone is depressed, a lot is going through their mind.

Take them out for some exercise or find a way to get them out of the house.

It depends how severe it is.They probably should talk to a Dr. about meds. if it is bad, otherwise a good ear,or shoulder to cry one is a great thing to give to them.

Acting extremely happy around a depressed person will only alienate you from them. How could a depressed person possibly relate to someone who is dancing around making happy noises?

Depression is far more than just feeling down. True depression is a dark and lonely place to be. Depressed people need love and support, they do not need a bunch of silly compliments and shrill voices. They are already down enough as it is. Very few people like a pollyanna, and depressed people hate them.

Push them to get anti-depressants, and if they make an excuse, make a drs appt for them with their dr, and if they can't afford it, find out about a sliding scale clinic. Offer to drive them to the appt and get those meds. It will probably make all the difference in the world, unless this is just a person who wants to share their misery with everybody else and doesn't really want to change.
