.is it true that crossing your eyes damages eyesight ?

someone told me that 's why they have glasses ... are they just kidding ? can that really happen ?

Report as

No it is not true. I used to have to do eye exercises to strengthen the muscles that controlled the eyes. Crossing them were some of the exercises I had to do.

Yes, you are right, but that exercise was prescribed by a trained professional as part of strengthening your eyesight. People with normal eyes risk damaging their ability to focus accurately by unnecessarily straining their eye muscles!
Report as
My exercises had nothing to do with vision. They had to do with a physical defect that many people assumed was lazy eye. It was in an attempt to prevent surgery. Had it been lazy eye it would have worked.

Also someone crossing their eyes on occasion isn't going to hurt. It is no different then looking to the extreme right or left. It is just using the full range of the muscles.
Report as
I agree - on occasions - your experience has just demonstrated that the muscles ARE affected by abnormal use. In your case therapeutically, in the case of irresponsible use, possibly not a desirable outcome.

This person SHOULD do it. It is actually an excellent exercise.
Report as
okay lets say this person crosses his/her eyes outdoor and its like windy out..and what if they get stuck in that position and this person is then crosseyed for life!!!!!!! oooo maiii goawshhhh!!! xD
Report as
LOL.... Why and how could they possibly get stuck. That is simply ridiculous.
Report as
well..you never know weird stuff happens and let's pretend it is for exercise..what's the benefit of this exercise?
Report as
To strenthen your eye muscles. YES.... people have muscles in their eyes... it helps them look about in different directions. You have never heard of a lazy eye before??? That is astounding.
Report as
i still think your eyes can get stuck and you could end up being crosseyed for life. okay what's the benefit of strengthening your eye muscles then?
Report as
Your eyes cannot get stuck. Are you old enough to be on ask.com?? That is something parents use to tell kids so they would not do it. It is called an old wives tale.
The benefit of strengthening your eye muscles is the same for exercising ANY muscle. To make it stronger.
Report as
Wow.... your profile says you are 19. Hard to believe unless you are just playing around.
Report as
and the benefit of making is stronger is? NOTHING!!!!!! THERE IS NO NEED FOR THIS EXERCISE MR! and yes i bet im older than you xD
Report as
omg stop checking my profile out. im gonna blush LOL
Report as
You arent older than me. The benefit of having strong eye muscles is to be able to continue to move your eyes in the direction you point them. A lazy eye is a medical condition that occurs when one eye muscles is not strong enough to control the way the eye goes. It is real.
Report as
so that kind of exercise would be necessary for someone with a lazy eye?
Report as
Dont blush... and that is why the profile is there.... so others can know a bit more about you. That is why you put that information in there.
Report as
Yes... It also comes in handy to NOT get a lazy eye.
Report as
i know its called a joke smart one -___-
Report as
It also comes in handy if you have an injury to your eye as well... an injury to the muscle of the eye. Like blunt force trauma.
Report as
okay so a person who does not have a lazy eye doesn't need to engage in such exercise xD
Report as
Not necessarily.
Report as
A person can work the muscles of their eye so that they dont GET a lazy eye. Or to recover from blunt trauma to the eye that causes damage to the eye muscle.
Report as
so i dont do the cross eyed exercise...meaning i could get a lazy eye if i dont do that exercise?
Report as
It is doubtful... but possible.
Report as
hmm i c

Probably not a theat to your vision unless you do it a lot. Can I tactfully suggest that your eyesight is the most precious sense you have and playing silly games with it is not recommended. At the very least you risk eye strain and overwhelming headaches - again - not recommended. Your choice and your life depends on your decision..... You can't buy a new set of eyes if you wear out the old ones!

It is actually a very good and healthy exercise for your eye muscles. Doing any kind of exercise is not considered a silly game. Exercises are good. Oh, and no one has ever lost their life from crossing their eyes... nor from going blind.

lol that 's very true

I have had to dissuade patients from this silly practice to cure their eyestrain headaches. Gatorblu has just demonstrated that abnormal use of the eye muscles DOES cause major changes in vision.

believe it is just a myth but back when I was knee high to a grasshopper, my mother told me it would

True. It is the reason grasshoppers have so many knees!
Report as
uh,..........why do they?

no, in fact your eyes are always to some extent crossed, it is how your eyes focus on objects, for proof extend your arm and do a thumbs up. now look at your thumb nail and bring it up to your nose. your eyes will become increasingly more crossed as your thumb gets closer
