You can buy a PC based tax preparation software and do it yourself. I've been able to manage using free on-line tax systems for the past number of years and that works out fine. I have to think they get some kind of kickback from the government for providing that service because they work hard to get you to use their free service so there must be something in it for them.

And you exemplify a point I've always made....it shouldn't be that hard to file your tax return. We need an overhaul of our tax system to make it easy and fair for everyone. Someday.

Love turbo tax. I use it for schedule c, schedule f, schedule se, 1040 and it never fails to be correct

That's alot of money to get your tax prepared. As boo said turbo tax is great. Give it a try. I use turbo tax online.

I've used TAX ACT.com many times. It costs $14.95 for the state filing and your federal filing is free. The results are accurate and it is easy to use. Good luck!

I have used TurboTax for years...love it! Very easy to use...the version I use is only about 50$. It guides you step by step through all of the deductions you have. The only thing is you have to do the work yourself! Where having a tax preparer, you drop off your receipts and forms and they do all that work. If you don't have much it is super easy to do. I usually do standard deductions, but one year did medical when my son was born and we had tons of hospital bills...built a spreadsheet with all the expenses itemized before getting started and it was really easy to put into TurboTax. If you own a business or do stock trading, you will probably want the Premier edition which costs a little more, but for me, the Deluxe works great.
