You may want to look for a wildlife rescue org in your area. It is illegal in most states to keep a native species as a pet. In the mean time you need to go to a pet store and get some cat milk (it's not from cat's it's formula for feeding kittens) regular milk doesn't sit well with most other animals and it could actually kill him.you can often get little baby bottles at pet supply stores for feeding kittens as well.

If its old enough, you can buy a squirrel mix, which contains nuts, sunflower seeds, and corn kernels.Make a 'squirrel house' out of a box for it to hide in if it starts feeling scared or nervous.

It's best to have a cage, like a bird cage, with some tree branches for climbing and a box he can hide and sleep in...cut it out to look kinda like a dog house. Some type of shavings are also good for the bottom,to keep him warm.

Use 2% milk....I raised the two in my pic....it needs to be fed every 4 hours, milk will need to be warm, not hot, and will need to keep it warm too.....a part of an old tee-shirt and a regular light bulb will work fine, just have a area for the squirrel to move to if it gets too warm.....feed it as much as it will eat, won't be much to start with which is why they must be fed every 4 hours.....it will most probably ween itself when it get old enough....mine did anyway....when it gets about 6 or seven weeks old you can put nuts for it to chew....it will need to chew to keep teeth wore down, and get a rodent water things that hang from the cage.

You are welcome. First site will give you some good info....second one has bulk nuts....can buy the same stuff in stores but about 1.00$ to 1.50$ cheaper to buy bulk. And I would check with your states Wildlife Dept to see what the laws are.....not that everyone follows them.....just good idea to know them. Squirrels a very territorial and may imprint on just one person and be sorta jealous ......mine likes to be rubbed and scratched and her belly played with...will ' love bite ' my fingers when playing.....has dreams too. Good Luck!!

Well, I didn't find mine in a normal way......I cut down the tree that had the nest in it....and came within about 6 inches from cutting it with a chain saw when I cut the tree into firewood. The nest was in a hollow branch way up in the tree, talking an oak tree 70 feet tall and I stopped counting at 145 rings...tree had died and was leaning over my driveway so I cut it for firewood, and never knew the nest was there till I picked up the section of tree limb and two tiny squirrels fell out. I knew nothing about squirrels, except they taste good.....sorry, but I grew up in the country and squirrels ate the pecans and raided the fruit trees so we ate them.....but I digress.....so I googled and told some of my internet friends and found one that had raised two squirrels so I pretty much did what they told me.....so I made them a nest and put a 75watt bulb on them, put a temp gauge in the box and kept it near 99.5 but had room for them to move from the heat if they got too warm....fed them every four hours with 2% milk....after two months one of them died....not a clue why...had just fed them 30 minutes before and when I looked in on them only one was alive....but the other squirrel, a girl, is doing well and is almost a year and a half since I cut tree. I made her a cage she can run around in and she and my cats play what I call ' tag ' sometimes....about the rabies, if the squirrel is never bitten by another animal that is already rabid, then it can't get rabies. And do not EVER forget that you have a wild animal, and you should always use caution when handling it....I have never been bitten hard enough to cause injury, but I respect the fact that she can, and will, bite......since there is no one here, well, human anyway, but me and I am all Gumdrop ( her name ) is all she knows....I am under no illusion tho....she will bite me if she feels threatened.....I do play with her and she will take my finger in her mouth, but has never bitten me hard.

Oh, and a word of warning, their claws are VERY sharp and can pin-prick your skin enough to make it bleed alittle, so when it gets old enough to scamper around on you I would wear something thick and long sleeve like a sweatshirt to protect yourself.....they need the sharp claws to climb....mine will run up one arm across my shoulders down the other arm flip over to the back side and run all the way back to where it started....run up and sit on the top of my head....jump to the countertop run around and jump back to me all faster than you can read this....when I try to catch her, she will run around to the middle of my back where I can't reach her....lol...she is smart. And do not put your fingers in the cage when you feed it.....they are possessive of their food, it's an instinct....and are territorial too so I would keep an eye on your little sister when she is near it....I know it may not be easy but better safe than sorry and you know how real young kids can be....the squirrel is not a cute toy...cute yes, but is still wild, and where you may be able to keep it as a ' pet ', it will still react if it were in the wild.

And about the links....first one is about squirrel care....pretty good too....second one is a site for squirrel food. I don't mind the questions, glad you care enough to want to help.

Well, sorry it didn't make it but death is a part of life and not all survive, but you did try and that is the important thing. Look at the bright side, you learned some things you didn't know and may get another chance to practice your knowledge by saving another critter someday.
