Why does my leg hurt then pop as I walk?

I have patella instability due to a shallow groove on my patellar surface of femur. The pain the popping just started, It sort of feels like when you need to crack your fingers because they hurt too much to bend, then that fixes it and the pain is gone.

I had this problem in high school. In my case the popping and pain were caused by my patella going off track and then back on again (because the groves that the patella tracks on were shallow). I would then have bruising from the patella pinching tissue in my knee when it would 'pop'. This began to happen so often that I wasn't able to use my knee anymore and had to have surgery to make the groves in my knee deeper and repair the damaged ligaments that hold the patella in place. You should let your doctor know what you are feeling so he/she can help you choose a treatment that is right for you. I wish you the best of luck
