A phosphate is an inorganic chemical or a phosphoric salt. In organic chemistry, it is referred to as an ester of phosphoric acid. As a biological particle, it is made up of oxygen and phosphorus and plays a key role in genetic processes of many organisms. For instance, it plays the role of a chemical component of nucleic acid, nucleotides and plasma membrane.
