Can comedy clubs legally require food/beverage purchases?

I went to a local comedy club this weekend, and while I wasn't in the mood to eat or drink anything at all, I was told that I HAD to purchase at least "two items." The cheapest thing on the menu was a bottle of water for $3.95. I thought this was ridiculous that they required such a thing, but decided to obey rather than stir the pot. I guess the worst thing they could have done would have been to ask me to leave - but I paid for price of admission (ticket). Is it legal for them to require a minimum purchase in their venue??

Private establishments can pretty much do what they want. Most likely it was posted by the door as you entered.

4 bucks for a bottle of water, that's so funny it could have been the opening act...)

Depends on the state.
Locally, I know they can require a price for admission ... or a minimum purchase ... but not both.
