Talk to your doctor about it ahead of time. There are other options, with varying results or (in some cases) side effects.
Basically, though, if you're getting an epidural for pain, just remember that the short pain of a needle will be far less pain than what you'll feel without it.

It doesn't hurt as much as you are imagining. You are just scaring yourself. Calmly get it done and it will be over in seconds. Nothing to worry about. Don't psych yourself out.

I have a fear of needles too, and what I do is focus on counting for my breathing - I really have to do that because otherwise I'll hold my breath and faint! Just count and breath in a rhythm, focus on that and the needle will be over with quick! (P.S. the needle doesn't stay, it's just really quick.)

i just don't wanna feel pain and i never had a needle go threw my back im scared

You're working it up to more than it is, trust me. Just distract yourself with a game on your phone and do the breathing exercises. It really isn't that bad. You know how freaked out you get when getting a shot, or getting blood drawn, but then it turns out to be such a minor thing? Same deal here.

If this is for childbirth, think about going natural instead. If your OB doesn't foresee any problems, you'll be better off. It really isn't as bad as you imagine, and once they place that baby in your arms, you forget all about it! If it's for some other procedure, maybe they can give you a pill or some kind of gas to relax you before they do the epidural. Good luck!

I GET THEM ALL THE TIME. I get IRFC nerve blocks and ablasions. They burn out the nerves near my spine. they can dermaly numb the area before the injection but not ness. stay still and relax. the more you tense up the harder your muscles contract making it harder to push in the needle. it will be more sore after too.
I was run over by someone talking on cell while driving. she blew a stop sign left me for dead.

Trust me, Jasmine----When your time comes, and you're beginning to feel those contractions, you will be thankful for the relief. Your fear of needles will be pretty-much secondary to the joy of getting through the birth pain-free. This is not worth worrying about. You will have other, wonderful things on your mind. As mentioned, talk with your doctor about options. Best wishes!

Honestly, the epidural needle didn't hurt as much as getting a shot or blood drawn. When the medicine started trickling in, it felt a little like it was burning and that hurt more than the needle. Relax, breathe and be glad that the epidural goes in your back...you can't see them putting it in (which is what always drives me crazy about needles lol).

Ask them to numb the area first. It can be done, just like they numb an I.V. But you do have to ask?

Try asking yourself. Why am I scared of a needle? Its not going to hurt me. Because it can't move. People are suppose to fight fear with logic. Think about it. And also think about the pro's and con's of the situation.

Ask your doctor for a Valium or Vistoril to help with the anxiety of needles....because you certainly don't want to even think about flinching during the procedure. Get them to numb it with a local and you won't feel more than a tickle.

Ive had 3 kids and I get scared at that moment too. Its normal. Just take a deep breath. It only takes a minute. As soon as its in the pain is gone. You will feel so much better!
