The term "hell" refers to the common grave of mankind. It's also referred to as Hades and Sheol. It's translation simply means the grave. At Ecclesiastes 9:5,10 it states "The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all . . . All that your hand finds to do, do with your very power, for there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in Sheol, the place to which you are going." Since the dead are conscious of nothing, hell cannot be a place of torment. We are taught that God is love (1 John 4:8), so to have people be tortured goes contrary to that.

In fact, God Promises a resurrection of those who have fallen asleep in death. At Acts 24:15 it says, "there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous."

I hope this answers your question.

Revelation 20:10 KJV
And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

Besides Revelation I don't think anywhere in the New Testament. Not even Purgatory, I think. A lot of things we are taught as children have no basis in the Bible or testaments.

The Bible diesnt really descibe hell physically, any more than it does heaven, beyond a brief mention of a lake of fire. Hell will be as infinite as heaven will be tho and will be far more than a mere lake of fire just as heaven will surely be more than the New Jerusalem city.
All the Bible does assure us of is that heaven will be infinitely perfect joy and hell will be infinite evil and torment.

Some translations don't even use the word Hell because no one really knows if there is a Hell or not and many people believe that the references to Hell are really have symbolic meanings not actual fire and destruction and torture. Most of Revelations is about prophecies and Armageddon and doom and gloom so if you are looking for a description of the lake of fire or hades or the second death you will find it in Revelations, Matthew also has some references to it and so does Luke, Mark, 2 Samuel and 2 Thessalonians.

"But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death" (Revelation 21:8).

The Bible only has brief mentions of fire or "hell" and are usually just details from a larger picture. For example, Revelation is the record of a vision or prophesy from the gospel John. R 20:10 is often used for a description of hell, but it is actually only part of the whole statement, starting at verse 7: "(7)And when the thousand years are ended, Satan will be released from his prison (8)and will come out to deceive the nations that are at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea. (9)And they marched up over the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, but fire came down from heaven and consumed them, (10)and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were..."

The punishment of the wicked dead in hell is described throughout Scripture as "eternal fire" (Matthew 25:41), "unquenchable fire" (Matthew 3:12), "shame and everlasting contempt" (Daniel 12:2), a place where ?"he fire is not quenched" (Mark 9:44-49), a place of "torment" and "fire" (Luke 16:23-24), "everlasting destruction" (2 Thessalonians 1:9), a place where "the smoke of torment rises forever and ever" (Revelation 14:10-11), and a "lake of burning sulfur" where the wicked are "tormented day and night forever and ever" (Revelation 20:10).http://www.gotquestions.org/hell-real-eternal.html

Acts 2:27 "my soul in hell" [King James]. "abandon me to the grave"
[New International] "abandon my soul
to Hades"[Revised Standard] "not abandon my soul to the realm of death"[The Bible in Living English]
Just like a flame on candle, where does the flame go when you blow out the candle?
