Why do you think responsibility for public safety has shifted from the individual to the government?

Report as

The total LACK of "Personal Responsibility" is the cause of US citizens allowing the 'government' to take over "public safety" issues. Why should I "take responsibility" for anything if I am able to 'marginalize' my own responsibility by allowing others to to step in for me?
BTW Walt_OReagun and I are reading completely different 'History' books.

I think Walt meant there has always been cops, sheriffs, military, kings etc that have protected people.

Fabulous answer coach. You nailed it.

Partially, bigred ... but there has NEVER been a time in history when individuals, without the backing of government, have been responsible for public safety.

By the same token, it's only recently that government has taken any responsibility for individual safety. Which (as coach says) is partially due to a lack of personal responsibility.

Because a individual cannot take the responsibility for the public safety. Or would you like to take on al-Qaeda all by yourself? Or the Mafia? Things have changed a bit since the days of the old west.

Public Safety has ALWAYS been the responsibility of government ... for thousands of years.

FunnyLittleFrog

It was never up to the individual. That would not be safe at all.
