What helps you to refocus your cluttered thoughts and focus on the things you need to focus on?

it's noon, and that's normally when I start my papers. I need to finish it up today-I need to type and re-vise and need to add on a conclusion. normally I am very good about tucking other thoughts and concerns away-but I've been having a hard time lately, and things keep looming over my head... tips? thanks! edit;I know I should just start, and I plan to, but sometimes that gives me writers block when my mind is too cluttered.

Shaylen, you may be past this stage but when I find myself in your situation I take a blank sheet of paper, write the topic in the middle and encircle it. Then using a series of related ideas linked with connecting lines, I just let the imagination flow.

The page ends up looking like a bunch of balloons all tied to a central point like string.

From there it's easy to select the ideas I can use and tackle them in the order that fits best.

For some reason the random circles (rather than just making lists) seem to work better with our creativity.

I was going to post this-but figured you'd probably already know the answer-I always get these two mixed up! How do you know when to use "affect" and "effect" appropriately? I know one is a verb, and one is a noun, but I mix them up sometimes!
Report as
Effect is the noun.
If one action changes another it affects it.
If the water going down the gurgler has a left hand thread, that's due to the Coriolis Effect.
Does that help?
Report as
Ahh that's my problem-I though affect was the noun. That does help a bit. Thanks again, dodgy :)

Here Shaylen. See if this helps your affect/effect cunundrum.

Now, can you help me with catsup/ketchup? I never know what to buy! ;-)
Report as
thats happy :) lol and stick with the ketchup- never trust anything with the word "cat" in it, especially food ;)

My rescue cats are ALWAYS trying to get into our food! Good advice - will do! Why add more pet hair to the stew? =)
Hope your paper is going well!
Report as
Opps, I meant THANKS not that's.... Anyway yea, don't want anymore cats involved in food! I finally finished my paper :) so, yah!

Sweet Shaylen, give yourself a pat on the back! Do it again, you deserve it! One more time! Pat, pat, pat. ....okay, now you just look silly....

No word processors, Happy? Good grief! When I was a lad they hadn't even invented TYPEWRITERS.

Cuneiform took much longer.

I like to make a summary of what I'm going to write. That way, I can organize things in my papers so they'll gel. Also, I'll use several different colored highlighters as another way to organize. I can move different ideas around as needed that way.

I like the coloured highlighters. They'd work much the same way as my circles and lines.

Ha your just all over the place with these questions aren't you! Keeping everyone on their toes. Ha I do the same thing though, and it takes me forever to actually get started. I think about everything and anything, and I get distracted. The best thing I've found is try and take away all distractions. Put music on if you work better that way and just start writing. Even if it has nothing to do with your paper just write whatever comes to mind. It helps me to write down everything and actually see everything I'm thinking about so its not so cluttered in my mind. Once, you have that written start to actually work on your paper. Before you know it you'll be so into writing everything that comes to mind you'll actually get work done. I know it sounds dumb, but it helps me ha. And I'm sure I'm late with this advice too.
