Depends. If you need a device that helps you keep information (like for school, work, etc.) and a variety of other programs then go for a laptop. If you just want a device that allows you to do simple things like check emails on the go, research short things, or anything of the similar sort then go for a tablet.
Laptops have flash player available so many websites are found there and not on tablets. Many apps are not available unless you get a Mac and even those have only a few apps, overall you need to decide, for school or college, laptop all the way, for fun&games but sometimes school, tablet.
Frankly if you get a nice day nough tablet you don't need a laptop. I use an Asus Transformer Infinity. It's actually a tablet that turns into a laptop. It only costs $650 for the tablet and the laptop dock together and it has a lot of great features. I do have a laptop but I actually find that I don't use it as much as my infinity.
I guess you really would need to provide more information for people to really help you. However, I would agree with the other folks on the page who said laptop. The only reason that this is generally a better decision is because the laptop has a lot more functionality. Also, you could get the best of both worlds, functionality of a laptop, and the cool factor of the tablet, by buying a Windows 8 machine with a full functional keyboard and a touch screen.
