To make a long story short yes. Calories are defined as the energy required to heat a mL of water one degree celsius. Your body can take calories from fat, protein or from carbohydrates. If you take in more calories then your body needs it will store it away for use later, in the form of fat. A great way to avoid getting fat is to increase your caloric intake such as exercising.
Well calories sort of explain weight gain. It's what the calories are made up of that usually do the trick. However, in theory, if one ate only extremely low fat, low carb, healthy food but ate too many calories of those foods, they could still gain weight!
