After I update my iPhone 3G it still says it's running on the 4.2.1 not the 5.0. What should I try?

Unfortunately, the 3G is not compatible with iOS 5.0, and iTunes won't update your phone beyond iOS 4.2.1. iOS 5 is backwards-compatible only as far as the 3GS.

My iphone 4 which still is a 3G had the version 4.2 and it worked updating to ios 5

iPhone 3G is an older model. There was the original iPhone, iPhone 2, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, & now iPhone 4S.
