Yes of course. Nationalism exists in all countries. If you are proud of your country, then that's one thing. If you are proud of your country to the point that you believe your country is unconquerable and start hating other nations, then that's nationalism. Its bad and that's how WWI started.

Very much so. Americans are very patriotic and many are extremely so. I mean we passed a law requiring schools to make kids chant a pledge of allegiance they barely understand at school every day. I mean, how many 6 year olds even have a clue what it means?

Maybe they should show them a video of Red Skelton explaining in very simple terms what it means. In fact everyone should watch it and maybe they also will no longer just say the words, but feel the meaning.
Report as
One would hope so.
Report as
I knew what it ment when I was 6
Report as
I think there's a difference between knowing what the words mean and really understanding the commitment made when one pledges allegiance to something. My point is that 6 year olds get the basics but not the depth or ramifications of that commitment.

Hate to have to ask this of two of my fave people.. But; have you looked up the definition of Nationalism? And if so; do you feel it to be a good thing in light of it's actual meaning? Seriously would like to know....
Report as
Wit, if the meaning is in the sense of patriotism and national pride that SHOULD bind us together, then yes it is a good thing. If however the part that we are better then others and that we should not work with the world community, then no I don't agree with that aspect of it. I think it is the latter form that boondox41 above expressed as a negative.
Report as
Ok, thought so, you have never come across as a Nationalist in the negative sense. Thanks for clarifying.:-)
And within your interpretation I Fully agree!

Unfortunately there is a large element in this nation that are Nationalists in the very negative sense of the term. It is these people that willfully ignore facts and claim that President Obama is a socialist and Muslim and not born here. They are a stain on our national pride, but THEY feel they are the only real Americans. They're a sad excuse for Americans really, bad it is up to REAL Americans to tolerate them and accord them their 1st amendment rights, though I doubt they would do the same if they had the option. :(

Couldn't agree with you more! This is not just a growing problem in the U.S., seems the world as a whole is taking on more and more intolerant views; makes one wonder... With the internet supposedly "opening views and opinions to the world" has it actually done the opposite by having so much unsubstantiated and "tainted" materiel spewed daily?
Report as
I believe it has always existed, it seems the internet has only brought it out in the open, and of course extremists will take advantage of it. I'm hopeful that the "Arab spring" and the protests in Iran, China, and other totalitarian states are a sign that rational minds will prevail, eventually. :-/

One can hope...
Sadly I always seem to start a good conversation with you too late (early:-).) in the night; am not up to thinking much as is 3am..you seem a NightBird also!
Good night or good morning Caluvox:-)

Very true Wit!! Good night to you as well :)
Report as
Ditto what cal says. I also think part of the growing problem is the nature of the Internet. Stereotypes, exaggerations and outright lies are rampant along with the number of people that believe them.
