It is very, very hard to help anyone out of depression. The best thing to do is try to find out what is (really) causing the depression and then be as compassionate as you can. Just letting someone know you care and are listening can go a long way if the complaint is legitimate and not just a self pity party. If it's a pity party watch out or they may pull you down with them. In that case you need to gently and lovingly try to get them to look for counseling. Help them realize there is no reason to be ashamed of needing advice. If this person is a young adult or adolescent it is even more important to seek help as our hormonal growth changes can often confuse tremendously at such a chaotic time in our lives when peer pressure and our own bodies can betray us.

so far i've helped him a little, but every time i ask him what's causing it, he says i don't want to talk about it. another day we were talking and i told him about how i went though depression too, and i was cutting then he tells me he has done things pretty recently also, ill and he'll say he doesn't want to talk about it. could he be hiding something thats bad enough to hide from me.?

Depression is a serious condition and it would be best to try and talk to your friend to seek professional help. Make sure that you keep in touch with him often so that he has someone who cares about him to talk to him. You can also try and find time to go and visit him in this state.

Try to talk to him, make him realise that life is worth living. Try to put a smile on his face. Don't push it though, people with depression are very unstable so tread lightly and little by little try and put the life back into him. Most of the time people who say they want to kill themselves don't actually want to, and it's just a cry for help. A cry for the people who hurt him, for the family that didnt treat him right or the girl that left him down in the dumps. He doesnt want to die, he wants to show the world that they didnt treat him right. Obviously I don't know his story and it might be different.
One thing, don't lose your temper at him. This might be the trigger to end his own life.

Best thing to do that he might not understand now is try to get him some help. talk to him tell him to talk to doctor if he doesn't then next step is to talk to him mom/dad later on in life he would see you really care for him.
