Ford Rangers are great little trucks. I have had 2, a 1998 and a 2000. The 2000 got 200,000 miles with only an oil pressure sensor went bad. I sold it and the guy still drives it everyday. It was the 4.0 auto. 4x4. Rangers are cheap to work on, lots of parts in yards, Ford dealerships everywhere.
I'd find a 2001+ Ranger Extended cab 3.0 L engine and automatic. You will find these in the $5000 price range if they have about 120,000-miles already. You can't expect a lot for $5000, especially a Toyota Truck, as they didn't sell as many as Ford Ranger's and Toyota does have a better brand equity image that commands a higher price.
I'd buy another Ranger in a heartbeat. I see them all the time with 200,000 miles and still drive like new. Of course they'd have to be taken care of like anything else.

Look into the Toyota Tacoma. A mid-size truck with some reasonable power and fairly good gas mileage. Just don't carry around a lot of useless weight.

lol on the ford ranger. I have a 1994 Ford Ranger xl, 4 cylinder, 5 on the floor. 100 hp, 306,000 miles, good gas mileage and is still going strong. it is how you care for the vehicle that keeps it going.

I would have to agree with the ford ranger! You can pick them up cheap! If you want good gas mileage get the 2.3 4cyl with manual transmission! Auto kills gas mileage! ( example my 96 mustang gt avg 26mpg freeway with manual, my buddies '04 v6 mustang auto gets 19!)
