Did Jesus fail?

Jesus came supposedly to save all men. Yet only a very small percentage of people in history have been Christian. If I saw ten people stranded and told you "I will save all of them" but only saved three or four wouldn't that make me a failure?

Jesus provided salvation for all people. However, it is up to each of us to accept it for ourselves.

Well, remember that the Old Testament is the chronicle of the Israelites (named that bc they were descendents of the man Israel.) Back at the beginning, God promised Abraham (Israel's ancestor) that "your children shall inherit the earth." So basically back then salvation was promised to any sect who could trace their history back to Abraham (or, taking the Bible literally, any descendent of Abraham.) The people called the "gentiles" were not "God's people" and so were not promised salvation. But when Jesus came, salvation was promised to everyone, including the gentiles, as long as they accepted Jesus and God. It's to God's glory to accept everyone, and not exclude people just because of their ancestry.

How could God fail? No Jesus did not fail, but man has failed from the beginning. It's man's chose to receive Salvation. Therefore it is man that rejects it. He alreay knew from the beginning that there will only be a small percentage that chose to follow Him.

Matthew 7:13

13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.

That scripture means He died for all mankind that is willing to accept it. If all mankind accepted it then all would be Saved.

1 In the beginning was the Word ( Jesus ), and the Word ( Jesus ) was with God, and the Word ( Jesus ) was God. 2 He ( Jesus ) was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him ( Jesus ), and without Him ( Jesus ) nothing was made that was made.

I never got the impression that he was here to 'save all' .. The way I understand it, is he came to provide salvation. There is a chasm of difference. He came to provide "the way" .. it is up to the rest of us to make a choice.

The Sword is a represention of the Word. The Word Of God.

Matthew 26:52

52 But Jesus said to him, “Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword.

Hebrews 4:12

12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Ephesians 6:14-20

14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints— 19 and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
Report as
If the word of god is represented by a tool used for killing I feel that is something to think about- more over- such barbaric devices should be left in the past and dark ages where they belong. In a perfect world we need no swords and our world will never be perfect with them. Throw out the swords and purify the temple or face wrath wrought by your own heart brought in your own hand. The bible rains death on us all because it was always a tool for killing and apprehending power- just like the sword.
Report as
I think the term "sword" is meant figuratively. He is coming to clean house, so to speak. His ultimate target is Satan.
Report as
Yes, and figuratively speaking, swords are for killing- something we REALLY should be leaving in the past.
Report as
TIO - Sometimes it's not what's said that's wrong, but how it's interpreted. All those past supposedly Christian congregations who killed people because of their nonbelief, interpreted the Bible other than how it should be interpreted. Yes a sword can be used to kill but that's not what Jesus means: He means swords are powerful and much like a sword is the Word; and the metaphor is not to be taken with any violent meaning.
Report as
JamesKaeberle
Amen! MM
Report as
The image of Jesus coming to 'kill', like MadMarcus15 explained is a metaphor. The coming of Jesus .. can happen in ways that even yet we haven't even begun to understand it's full potential. Anything from natural disaster to human intervention (which could very well include things like Weapons of mass destruction, species (plant & animal) extinction and global climate altering ) falls under this 'umbrella' and 'scope' of things to come.

To 'kill' also can mean 'to put to an end'...again, it's a matter of interpretation. He is not coming here in the flesh to slaughter with his almighty steel sword .. he is coming here in spirit to 'put to an end'.

We have no control over history, what has transpired and how the bible was written .. but we can assuredly comprehend that we are in for a big change of things to come.

Bikergirl - Good comment. I was just thinking and came up with the idea that maybe God made us to enjoy His ways when we recognize them. I mean, if you think about it, God could have made humanity with complete opposite preferences and so we would see fairness and kindness as evil and grueling. But He made us so that we love His ways. (Sorry if this is kind of fragmented; I'm not on my literate game today. :P) What do you think?
Report as
Madmarcus- honestly if I find a sword lying around, I don't assume its used for anything savory especially one as stained with blood as Christianity.
Report as
Bikergirl- I'm not convinced in the slightest of these big changes. In fact all I can assume is that its likely- over a long enough time line- misinterpretation of the bible is inevitable and again we will see Christian death cults punishing the unbeliever for their heathen and pagan ways. It's not like they took the chapters out that inspire Christians to kill us- you people just ignore them for now.
Report as
Oh, make not mistake .. I agree Truthisobvious .. I also believe the bible has been misinterpreted on many levels over the ages. Not only misinterpreted but conspicuously twisted to suit needs of men and rulers during the days where belief was a key factor in controlling the masses. Throughout history superstition, folklore and people in positions of authority have used scripture to manipulate, conspire, control and conquer in very dastardly ways.
Report as
TIO - You can't call one group worse than the other. All of humanity is stained with blood.

About your comment to Bikergirl: misinterpretation of anything is possible; that's not God's fault, it's the misinterpreter's. Everyone sins, no one is perfect and you can't single out Christians.

I don't think anyone can lay blame on God for our misinterpretation ... I most certainly never even remotely suggested that ... It's not even logical. I am the first one to point out at our imperfect nature ... Im not quite sure where you are going with your comment ... I also never singled out Christians ... Again .. I reiterate what I've been saying from the beginning ... We can not all be painted with one brush.

I was responding to the comment you addressed directly to me. I never said you blamed anything on God
Report as
MM- I don't think you are understanding me- I'm not saying any people are bad, I don't consider us responsible but for what we leave. I'm saying a book like bible, lying around, taught the way it is in conjunction with teachings that supress critical thinking and rational and logical inquiry- like many churches do and most silently support, is a recipe for violence. The misinterpretation comes from a poorly communicated message in a book people have a tendency to misunderstand and a compulsion to perpetuate its message rather than understanding from a modern sense. This often results in bigotry and violence when that is far from what we need. I'm not saying Christians are bad- I'm saying the bible is.
Report as
I understand what you are saying Truth .. but, I respectfully disagree.

The bible is a book of knowledge and testiment. It gives us a lot of insight into something much bigger than us. It provides a way to help us to understand a little bit of history as well as who we are, how we as humans function. Kind of like a human body & brain 'owners manual'. It is meant to shine light on how to conduct ourselves and to make things better.

However .. It has been used and abused since it's inception. Knowinging it's powerful nature, men have convoluded the truth and it's very intention by using it's contents to control and manipulate for their own gain. Like any book, .. even a harmless nursery rhyme can be construed into something that it wasn't intended, and turned into something dark and sinister thanks to misinterpretation. We as humans .. are good at doing that.

That's where faith steps in .. faith in finding the truth...Whatever that is.

What sort of allegedly "loving" deity who wants to "save" all humanity would present that message to a tiny group of ignorant desert dwellers? What sort of "loving" deity requires blood sacrifice in the first place? Christianity is not much different than other earlier mythologies of the region.

No, he did not fail. He was to remain loyal to death in order to fulfill the purpose for which he came to earth--to free humans from sin and death and to vindicate his father's sovereignty. It is a fact that many do not recognize the significance of the ransom sacrifice and mock it. His sacrifice did not mean that ALL or even a great number would accept him. He made it clear in scriptures such as Matthew 7:13,14 "Go in through the narrow gate; because broad and spacious is the road leading off into destruction, and many are the ones going in through it; whereas narrow is the gate and cramped the road leading off into life, and few are the ones finding it."

We need to decide whether we want to take the path that the majority take, the easier path, living life to please ourselves; or to take the path not commonly taken nor preferred as it is the path that may lead us to difficulties, the path of sacrifice, where we live according to God's will...

He wasnt here in a competition. He was here as a Gift to those who would choose to accept it. Since so many did accept it and cont to do so thats hardly a 'failure'. That some humans with free will to choose either way do not choose him/God is a reflection on their foolishness, not on Christ. He did exactly what God sent him here to do, fulfilled his original purpose. One day he will return to fulfill his second purpose. Christianity is the largest religion in the world. Thats hardly failure. If there are idiots who choose freely to deny him thats not on him.
Besides he knows the ultimate victory is his anyhow. He knows hes the coach for the team that will ultimately win the championship. Hard to be a failure when you know youll take the ultimate trophy.

Depends on what you consider success. If such a man existed, the very fact his name is venerated 2000 years later says a lot. However, if one considers the legacy of the faith created in his name, they too often failed him. I think the numbers of those who follow his teachings are proof he (or his promoters) didn't fail.

I reject your premise, but accept the conclusion. Jesus did not "come" for whole of humanity, only for the Jews. He was supposed to kick out the Romans, and reinstate Jewish sovereignty over Judea with a righteous and God fearing monarchy. He accomplished none of those, and the Jews were right in rejecting him. After his utter failure that ended in catastrophe galore and the public humiliation he so deserved, some of his followers "adjusted" the goals to fit with his real or imagined deeds aposteriori. That was done mostly by Paul. So yes, Jesus was probably the greatest failure in human history!

Wrong! It was all part of God's plan from the beginning. God knew what He was doing from the very beginning. He knows all thing Past Present Future and He's all powerful. He knew the Jews would reject Him but He still loved them and make a covenant with them which still stands today. That was The Old Testament and He went on to make it better in The New Testament. Since the Jews rejected Jesus He said Okay then I will take Salvation to the Gentiles. In which therefore made Salvation available to all mankind. And after the first 3 and a half years of Jacobs Trouble the Jews will finally realize that Jesus was indeed the Messiah and they will receive Him as their Lord and Savior.

Oh he failed. Not one person has lived past their time in the eternal life he promised. He has not returned after more than 2000 years, not everyone is given the chance at salvation, his covenant is splintered in so many pieces no one can be rightly sure just who is right and a number of people don't believe he ever existed. Wars are fought in his name, slaughter done by it as well, he is made a television mockery frequently even after his alleged death and his words fall on deaf ears for the majority have no idea what is truly written in the bible and for what purpose. The one thing he succeeded in is bringing the sword as he promised in place of peace because the conflict is never ending surrounding his name. It's too bad his only great success was an epic fail in reality. Like watching hitler climb to power to meet his goals- no one now cares for his accomplishment and resents him for it.

Jesus made the way of salvation possible for "whosoever believes". There was nothing we could do to save ourselves, so God did it for us.
Some people make the mistake of thinking that, since Jesus died for the sins of the world, everyone will go to heaven one day. This is incorrect. The substitutionary death of Christ must be personally applied to each heart. Before we can become 'the
righteousness of God in Him,' we must exchange our old sin nature for His holy one. God offers the Substitute, but we must receive that Substitute personally by accepting Christ in faith (Ephesians 2:8-9).

John 3:16,36. Both these scriptures highlight the need for an exercising of faith in order to benefit from the sacrifice of Christ Jesus. As seen in the garden of Eden God gifted our parents with free moral agency. They could choose for themselves which path to take. However, like a person who chooses to be and alcoholic, or smoke there are inevitable consequences to their actions. Similarly with Christs sacrifice. God does not take away our right to reject the benefits from Jesus death. "What is looked for in stewards is for a man to be found faithful." Funny to even suggest that. Unless one never read the Gospels...or never studied history....or never read Revelation...or never met a single genuine disciple of Jesus...or never read Jesus' own words about His life and mission. He did say to God the Father, "I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do."

Jesus is the one who also said "God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life...whoever believes is not condemned...whoever does not believe stands condemned already."

So salvation has some connection to 'whosoever.' If I were the only one to believe/trust in Him, God would still proclaim the Son a success. God the Father, in fact, said He was "well pleased" with God the Son, before He died and rose again. Something to consider.

The Bible say a lot about Jesus. All of the laws and prophecies ever written were fulfilled through him and by him, so the Bible says. However the most interesting thing I've read about Jesus is found in the book of Colossians 1:16-20. There it tells us not only who and where he was before coming to the earth, but why and how he did what he did when he was on the earth, and the reason it was so important to do what he did. No one person has all the answers. But the Bible can answer all of our questions, that is if we really want an answer truthfully. Here is a website you and many others might find very informative if you really want to get truthful answers. www.jw.org John 8:31,32
