How do I properly clean the opening for ear buds on my ipod nano?

The sound keeps going in and out, and gets distorted. I've tried different ear buds, so I believe the problem is with my ipod.

When that happened to me, mine wouldn't work and when I took it to the Apple Store, I found out it couldn't be fixed and I had to get a new iPod.

The best way to clean your iPod earbuds is by using a cotton ball with some alcohol. Unplug the earbuds from the iPod, wet a cotton ball with alcohol and gently rub it on the earbuds. Allow them to dry completely before reuse.
