I am a Vet Tech and most Vets I've worked with have told me to stay away from canned food, or use it on a limited basis. The main reason for this has to do with dental health. Unless you are planning to brush your cat's teeth, they need crunchy food to help remove plaque and keep their teeth and gums in good shape. Cats who eat only canned food need their teeth cleaned frequently, which involves anesthesia, and is expensive. I would talk to your vet about this.
There are several excellent choices: Nature's Choice is one; so is Wellness; also, we use Target's "Boots & Barkley" brand. With all of these foods, stay away from any fish flavored foods, and also, try to get away from dry foods--our vet told us canned foods are best: cats aren't supposed to eat dry cereal! All brands have weight-loss formulations. The other key is to NOT free fees. In other words, kitty gets two meals a day, morning and night--food stays down for 1/2 hour, and then is taken up.
Read the ingredients info on the back.of the bag. Stay away from any foods with chicken digest (yes it's what's in the chicken when they kill it), corn or wheat gluten meal or tons of unpronounceable chemicals..The fewer protein sources the better . I kept a kitty with inflammatory bowel alive until she was 20 using blue buffalo and wellness foods. The extra money you spend on food will be saved on vet bills.
buy a bag of frozen fish, i usually go with talapia because its the cheapest, and feed your cat 1 piece per 5 lbs of weight. make sure not to cook it. In the wild cats eat raw food so trust me, there is nothing wrong with feeding your pets raw food. raw chicken can also be used instead of fish. just use 4 oz of chicken per 5 lbs.

stay away from canned food! Normal cat food is good and about once a week give your cat some left over meat. Its good for them to have real meat sometimes AS LONG AS THERE'S NO SPICES OF ANY SORT ON IT. Also don't give your cat milk, it gives them worms (not good at all for you or your cat! )
