Kneading the space to soften it up. As nblacksmith says: nesting.

She is kneading the softness of the spot she about to be comfortable on like she did as a kitten with her mother.

I rescue abandoned and abused cats. I am glad I could help. Enjoy your "baby" and your evening.

Kneading or "making muffins" is an instinct cats retain from their newborn stage. They originally kneaded while they fed from their mom, the kneading motion is supposed to stimulate milk production in a mommy cat. So when your cat makes muffins on you, it's cute because she probably feels like you are her mother figure. :)

She is making her self comfy. It is the cat equivalent of you fluffing your pillow before laying down.

They do this to show their total contentment with you! Notice that your cat is also purring. l have 3 purr monsters and they 'make biscuits' every night.

My dog spins in circles and plops, or if he's on the floor he'll stretch, plop, and stretch his back legs out like a frog. O.o

She's kneading it to make it comfy for her to lay down. In the wild she would do that to flatten grass and stuff down to make herself a "nest". :) I find it very cute.
