Why does my lawyer need my social security number in order to take my case?

This is not for a disability case. It is a real estate matter concerning a mold issue. He is asking for this now prior to me coming in to the office (I am currently in the hospital due to breathing issues) to sign a contract..

Well I suppose they need to make sure you are who you say you are.

I am not sure except if you are awarded damages they may need to make certain you are who you say you are to cut a check... Ask the attorney.

I know they will need it eventually for a payout, but I was a bit surprised that it was requested even before I signed a contract. I thought perhaps they needed to check on me to see if I have been involved in other lawsuits or something not related to payout.

You may be right... Dud you ask why they wanted this very personal data?

I will obviously get more detailed when I go in to sign the contract, but he had wanted it over the phone prior to signing. It was a quick conversation with so much to talk about that my question regarding why was kind of glazed over. I do not think it was intentional, but it did get me to thinking why. Payout, when and if it comes is so far down the road, and I obviously wouldn't get any $$$ if I did not give the Social, so while they need it for that, I do not think it is the sole reason.......................I was hoping someone in a lawyers office or someone who has past experience would respond....He knows who I am, and he knows I will eventually get it to him if I want a settlement check, I just thought there may be specific reasons....it is just plain curiosity on how the system works.

Your lawyer probably needs your social security number in order to confirm your identity before beginning the case. This will prevent him from getting any surprises in court when making his case against the real estate agency.

I was thinking there had to be another reason. He actually met me in the hospital in rehab which is also a nursing home facility. I was helping his Mom. He had no idea why I was there, and I had no idea he was a lawyer. We talked for three weeks before we exchanged stories. I have a ton of hospital bracelets with my name and obviously I can't be impersonating anyone since you are now required to give multiple forms of photo ID due to insurance scams.

A social security number doesn't confirm your identity. People use fake social security numbers all the time. It's one reason fraud and identity theft are so prevalent. If I had to hazard a guess, I would imagine that if at some point you didn't pay your attorney and he or she sues you for attorney fees, having your social security number probably makes it easier to track down your assets.

There's also the more obvious explanation that your social security number will be used for a credit check so the attorney knows whether you will be able to afford their services.
